Strong Women, Strong Bones - The single most important factor in preventing osteoporosis, low bone density and the increased risk of injury from falls is strength training. You may take all the calcium supplements you want, and eat calcium rich foods, but, unless you trigger the body to absorb it by placing load through the long bones (strength training) most of the calcium will pass directly through your bodily system to be excreted unused. Whether you are older, retired, men or women, your bones will remain more dense due to the effects of strength training. A side benefit of the strength training is that strength is a major factor in maintaining balance, so you are less likely to fall and therefore less likely to fracture a hip or otherwise sustain fall-related injuries. Regular strength training exercise is the key to stronger bones.
