MURRAY Bridge library staff were literally doing the heavy lifting last week as they transport thousands of books across the road to the Murray Bridge Marketplace.
After a construction delay pushed back the opening of the new library earlier this month, the old library at Mobilong House is starting to look bare, with the long-awaited move underway.
Removalists are packing and moving the tens of thousands of items in the library’s collection across the road to the new state-of-the-art facility at the shopping centre.
And while library staff members clean out their offices and the books are packed and moved, construction workers at the new library are rounding off the edges ahead of the February 6 opening.
The mammoth task of moving an entire library has taken months of planning and was expected to be completed yesterday.
But bookworms around the region will have to wait to celebrate the new repository with the official opening not scheduled until February 14.
The new library will feature cutting-edge technology, including smart library cards and a new checkout system that will allow customers to borrow more easily.
The new facility will be twice the size of the old Mobilong House library and will also see the city’s toy library permanently incorporated into the collection.
