Gold grain haul

29 Aug, 2008 08:50 AM
SOUTH Australia is predicted to have the best grain harvest in three years, so Tailem Bend silos are gearing up for a busy few months.

In response to the predicted grain haul, the Australian Barley Board is looking to fill about 650 harvest casual positions across the State, including Tailem Bend.

ABB Tailem Bend group leader Simon Paech looks after Tailem Bend, Peake, Coomandook, Coonalpyn and Geranium grain deliveries.

“There is potential for it to be a good year,” Mr Paech said.

Mr Paech said he would be looking for about 45 to 50 casual workers for the Tailem Bend group region.

The main jobs available at the silos will include work at the classification/weigh bridge, bunkers and grid attendance.

“Workers need to remember that the work is only seasonal,” Mr Paech said.

Tailem Bend strategic site chairman Adam Morgan said the season looked hopeful and ABB was hoping to conduct a successful recruitment campaign in the area.

The Tailem Bend group took in about 175,000 tonnes of grain in the 2007 to 2008 harvest season.

The Tailem Bend group is expecting to record in about 250,000 tonnes of grain for the coming harvest.

An 80,000 increase of grain from last season could be a boost to the region and its farmers.

Rural Solutions SA Consultant Craig Bell said the season had not been too bad, but the region could do with a little more rain.

But this season’s harvest would benefit many farmers who were struggling after years of drought.

“The grain prices have been good, which has kept the farmers going,” Mr Bell said.
