Job losses not the problem

LOWER than expected unemployment figures have not surprised two Murray Bridge businessses who say finding employees is still a struggle.

Australia's unemployment rate stood at 5.7 per cent for September, despite predictions it would hit the 6pc mark.

Adelaide Mushrooms chairman Douglas Schirripa said he paid little attention to employment figures because, despite widespread concern for the state of the national and international economies, good workers were still hard to come by.

"We've put on about 100 (employees) over the last four months and we're looking to put on another 80 to 100 over Christmas," he said.

Mr Schirripa said the affect of turmoil in the global economy had not hit the business, which was still turning out about 70,000 kilograms of mushrooms every week.

Moore Engineering and Moore Mechanical echoed Mr Schirripa's position, saying the lack of good employees was starting to limit the company's output.

Moore Engineering had employed an extra four workers over the past six months but Travis Moore, from Moore Mechanical, said waiting lists were now full.

"It is frustrating because we have a good relationship with our customers and to let them down because of a lack of employees is very frustrating," he said.

He said the company had been advertising for new mechanics for more than a month but had not had any luck.
