THE Coorong District and Mid Murray councils have been congratulated for their role in fresh water management and water conservation during a water values council and community leadership forum held recently.
Local Government Association president mayor Felicity-Ann Lewis said the awards, which were presented by ICLEI Oceania, focus on local government successes in implementing effective, sustainable water management and are important in the recognition of local government’s role in water management.
“At a time when water is such an important issue across the entire of South Australia, and particularly in the regions, it is great to see councils are leading the way in excellence in fresh water management,” she said.
Mid Murray councillor Inez Bormann joined delegates from State and Local governments at the forum.
Mid Murray mayor Ian Mann said water conservation was one of the most pressing concerns facing local government and by participating in the Water Campaign the council was responding to vital issues of climate change and the importance of water management.
The Coorong council also received an award in recognition for reaching local climate change milestones, at a breakfast in Canberra.
The milestone awards for water quality, water conservation and carbon reduction initiative point to local government continuing to lead the charge in these important areas.
Coorong District Council mayor Roger Strother said it was great to be recognised for water conservation as the council faced many water issues in the area.
“The council is proud to be recognised for some of their efforts,” Mr Strother said.
“It was not expected at all.”
