Looking skyward for rain

CROPPING will not start without more rain on many Murraylands farms, despite season-breaking rain falling in other parts of the State.

Radnor sheep stud farmers Steve and Brett Koehler recorded 8 millimetres and 12.5mm of rain on their two properties since Anzac Day, not enough to start the cropping season for either property.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s still early enough (for more rain to start the season),” Steve said.

“I really need another 50 points (12.5mm) to do anything.”

Parts of the Yorke Peninsula received as much as 40mm in the past week, while the highest rainfall for the Murraylands was at Tintinara, with 27mm recorded in the seven days to Wednesday.

“Hopefully this rain will kick start some feed for the stock, but we need a good soak to get up the moisture in the soil,” Brett said.

“If we get another 12mm in the next week or two that would be the ideal situation.”

Rural Solutions SA farming consultant Craig Bell said the rain in the Murraylands was “not really enough” for farmers to start their cropping season.

“It would have been nice to get 30 to 40mm, it is still reasonably dry out there but we can still have a break up until the end of May,” he said.

“You could chance it and put in feed, but the problem is there needs to be more follow-up rains during the next week.” Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster David House said “light drizzle” could be expected in the Murraylands on Tuesday and more frequent showers were expected on Wednesday. He said the weekend weather would be fine and a weak front would come through the region on Monday which could produce 2 to 5mm of rain.
