THE preferred site for a shopping plaza in Mannum has been secured by commercial developer Leasecorp.
The company bought the property, formally owned by Mannum Sawmills, in late December.
Leasecorp is a large corporation that owns many retail facilities in country towns across South Australia.
Leasecorp proposed the $10 million retail facility to council at a meeting in May last year.
The proposed 2500 square metre facility includes a supermarket, eight specialty shops and more than 250 carparks.
Towns including Port Lincoln, Clare, Angle Vale and Port Pirie have had major retail facilities, similar to the one proposed at Mannum, developed in their townships.
The property is being rezoned to accommodate a commercial precinct, which should be finished by September this year.
The developers originally agreed to buy the land once the development had approval.
However, Leasecorp director Steve Palyga said the plans had changed, and the company decided to secure the property now.
We have got a lot of confidence in Mannum, Mr Palyga said.
The purchase of the land shows that we have a lot of confidence in Mannum.
Leasecorp bought the property through local real estate agent Adrian Davis, who is in full support of the project.
It is just what Mannum needs, Mr Davis said.
With all the growth in Mannum, a project like this is very timely.
If the land is rezoned successfully, the last step to a new retail centre appearing in the bustling town is approval of the developer's plans.
We are getting closer every day, Mr Palyga said.
