The 26-year-old was chosen from some of the State’s best up and coming farmers to win the $8000 prize.

Mr Schulz has a keen interest in cattle breeding and last year, with his wife Penny, established the Raven limousin cattle stud on his parents’ property.

Mr Schulz said he was honoured to have received the award as he knew some of the other competitors and held them in high regard.

“I will use the scholarship to travel to the United States to look at their cattle breed genetics,” he said.

“When I am there I plan to visit the Department of Agriculture as they are runing trials at the centre that are of interest.

“I hope the tour will help me to device breeding and marketing strategies.”

Mr Schulz said he would visit two trials while he was away that look into cross breed performance data.

“One is at the Clay Research Centre in Nebraska,” he said.

“This will give the performance data comparing breeds.

“The other is the F94L gene trial also known as the muscle gene, which are commonly found in the limousin breed.

“I hope this tour will give the stud credibilty, knowledge and understanding of the breed and cattle production.”

Mr Schulz said at present there were good opportunities such as the Peter Olsen scholarship for young farmers to gain extensive knowledge.

“There are lots of grants and incentives to get into the farming industry,” he said.
