APPROVAL of a pipeline pumping 110 gigalitres of water to Melbourne has raised the eyebrows of many in the Murraylands community.
This is particularly because the water for the pipeline will come from the Goulbourn River, which is part of the Murray Darling Basin.
Federal Environment Minis-ter Peter Garrett approved the pipeline with conditions late last week.
“Securing water supply for our urban populations is of fundamental importance,” Mr Garrett said. “The Victorian Government put this proposal forward on the basis that the water would be sourced primarily from savings from the ‘Foodbowl Modernisation Proj-ect’, which will also go to irrigators and importantly the environment.”
Federal Member for Barker Patrick Secker said the Federal Government was stealing water from South Australia.
“This is a national disgrace,” he said.
“This is 110 billion litres that will never reach South Australia.”
Mr Secker said the decision to approve the pipeline raised questions about the Gover-nment’s commitment to rectify the crisis in the Murray Darling Basin.
“I demand the Prime Minister explain why he is prepared to destroy rural and regional communities in South Australia, yet he is not prepared to tell his Labor mates in Victoria that stealing 110 billion litres out of the (basin) is not on,” he said.
