Ready to cycle the streets

04 Feb, 2010 08:29 AM
CYCLISTS in their thousands may flock to the Murraylands next January as part of the Santos Tour Down Under.

Councillors at the Mid Murray Council voted last week to apply to host either a start, finish or whole stage of the 2011 race.

Councillor Yeates moved to have the council submit an expression of interest prior to the February 5 closing date.

However, this action does not guarantee or commit council to hosting a stage.

In 2007 and 2008 Mannum hosted a stage of the tour.

The event was such a success the town was voted best dressed of the tour for both years.

Mid Murray Council Mayor Ian Mann said hosting the event again would showcase the region and be a great tourism opportunity.

“We are keen to host another stage,” Mayor Mann said.

“We didn’t apply for it (2010 Tour Down Under) this year.”

“But it brings tourists and is good for business.”
