Staff and visitors ape it up at the Monarto zoo

10/10/2008 5:00:00 AM
MONARTO Zoo was extremely busy at the weekend, with more than 2800 people turning out for its ‘Ape it up’ day on Sunday.

Primatologist Jane Goodall made a visit to see the nearly completed chimpanzee exhibit, and children’s entertainer Peter Coombe made enough noise to keep all the little animals excited.

Zoos South Australia visitor experience coordinator Steve Callery said the day was held in perfect weather and went down very well.

“It was fantastic,” he said.

“Jane Goodall is truly an inspirational person.

“She really enjoyed meeting staff and various people who attended the event as well.” As well as officially dedicating the chimpanzee exhibit, due to open at the end of the year, Dr Goodall also opened an art exhibition at the visitor centre.

On show until Decem-ber 19, the exhibition features chimpanzees and other African wildlife by Adelaide artist Patrick Hedges and Leigh Rust from Melbourne.
