ACHIEVING 200 little athletics attendances was a dream for Duke Wilkinson when he was three years-old.
Now at age 15, the athlete who joined the Murray Bridge Little Athletics Club in the tiny tots section, has passed that figure and is the first member to have attended 225 meets.
Wilkinson said he followed in his brother and sisters’ footsteps by joining the club.
“I thought I would give it a go and I have stayed ever since,” he said.
During the 12 years he has been involved with little athletics Wilkinson has competed against some of the best up and coming athletes in the State.
“One of the highlights of competing is winning a medal, but not only that, trying to achieve a personal best,” he said.
The teenager is one of three people in the club to have reached the 200 attendance mark, one of these being his sister.
However, Wilkinson is the first person to reach 225, and with one season to go before he is too old for the club, he is likely to reach the 250 mark.
Wilkinson said little athletics was a great way to not only keep fit, but to meet friends.
“It is very social,” he said.
“It doens’t matter how good you are, you just need to have a go.
“There are a lot of different sports in one (in little athletics) you can run, throw or jump.”
Wilkinson said his best events were shotput and discus.
He has travelled to Adelaide a number of times to compete in these categories.
He also holds the record as the fastest under 13 boys 1500-metre walk with a time of nine minutes and 41 seconds, which he achieved in the 2006-07 season.
Wilkinson said he looked forward to his last season at the club and hoped to create some records before he left.
“Once I finish in the under 17s I will consider whether I will continue athletics in the adult division which is held in Adelaide,” Wilkinson said.
Murray Bridge Little Athletics Club president Greg Nayda said Wilkinson’s achievement was something to be proud of.
“He always likes the challenge,” Nayda said.
“Duke is good with helping his younger team members out at training.
“Many of them look up to him.”
Nayda said Wilkinson was an asset to the club.
“Duke is not only a great athletic but demonstrates good sportsmanship,” Mr Nayda said. “He sets a good example.”
