THIS week’s Murray Towns A grade cricket games look fairly easy to predict, with the match of the round definitely between Monarto and Imperials.
Both sides will be keen to win, and will be hoping Meningie defeat Mypolonga, opening up a chance to play in next Sunday’s one-day final.
But the one club in the competition that is in ‘struggle town’ at the moment is Jervois.
The Bluds are in the first season of A grade in five years, after previously dominating the B grade competition.
The club currently sits at the bottom of the table, with just one win for the season.
Jervois has some promising kids coming through, but suffers from a lack of senior players available to help develop them.
The Bluds have won the past three flags in B grade with a predominantly senior side, so the question is, where have all their senior players gone?
While some of their veteran B graders have retired, it is disappointing to see the likes of Bruce Hameister and Craig Fidge jump ship when they could see the club might struggle this season in A grade.
Hameister is playing A grade for Mannum, while Fidge, who changes clubs almost as often as the wind changes, is playing for Langhorne Creek in the Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association.
If both these players played for the Bluds this season, plus Bruce’s brother Chris, Jervois would be very competitive and could even be eyeing off finals.
Here is a club with some talented young kids crying out to be mentored and nurtured, but it seems the majority of the club’s former senior players have abandoned them.
Full credit to Brenton Schultz and Daniel Gilmour for being loyal to their club and providing guidance to their youngsters, but they need help.
