Lakesiders deny Kookas victory

14 Feb, 2012 07:36 AM
MENINGIE denied Mannum its second shock victory in as many weeks, with the home side holding on to defeat the Kookas in a 10-run thriller in Murray Towns A grade on Saturday.

Mannum send the Lakesiders in after the winning the toss in overcast conditions.

After a steady start, three quick wickets to Tim Prince (2/17) and Harley Graetz (1/37) saw the match in the balance at 3/34.

From there on Meningie took control of the innings with Stewart Willis (48), Richard Boscenece (50 not out) and Brad Biddle (21 not out) combining together to lead the Lakesiders to a solid 4/154 at the end of their 50 overs.

Things got even better for the home side when Tyson Bradley had Mannum dangerman Noel Hartman back in the sheds for just eight, leaving Mannum at 1/14.

Michael Trotter (36) and Dwayne Krollig (40) got things back on track for the Kookas with a 39-run union before Bradley removed Trotter to see them 2/53.

When Travis Gladigau and Adrian Vivian followed shortly after, Mannum were staring down the barrel at 4/59.

Krollig and Tim Prince (21) put on 53 for the fifth wicket to give the visitors some hope, before Prince departed to see Mannum 5/112 but still in the game.

Krollig and Michael Vivian (15) looked as though they might have been able to steal the match for the Kookas but when both departed with in one run of each other, Mannum were 7/129 and all but out of the match.

Tyson Bradley was the best of Meningie’s bowlers with 3/36, while Hayden Biddle took 2/41.

Karoonda v Monarto

Monarto did enough to get over the line against Karoonda and shore-up second spot.

The Black Caps made a satisfactory 145 batting first, but things looked pretty grim for the visitors when they were restricted to 5/59 mid-way through their innings.

A strong partnership between Ty Pfeiffer (36) and Dale Leech (49 not out) resurrected things for Monarto with a 53-run stand before Leech and Kane Roocke (10) added a further 32 to get their side up to a competitive total.

Luke Hocking was Karoonda’s best bowler with 3/23 while Rhys Bullard and Nick Norman took two wickets each.

Karoonda began their chase is a steady fashion but when Monarto had their two best batsman Luke Hocking (15) and Rhys Bullard (8) back in the sheds with the total on just 54, the Magpies were always going to be up against it.

Monarto proceeded to reduce Karoonda to 8/79 before a late fight-back from Alex Keough (30 not out) at number eight added some respectability to the score and Karoonda finished up on 123.

Dale Leech took 3/23 in a good double for Monarto, while Kym Edwards somehow took 3/24 with his slow cream pies.

Mypolonga v Jervois

The Tigers continued their domination of Jervois with a convincing 71-run victory.

Batting first the home side amassed 8/212 with plenty of their big names contributing.

Mark Oborn (43), Jarrad Marsten (42), Gene Robinson (39) and Jack Daniell (46) all got amongst it for Mypolonga as they gave their bowlers plenty of runs to play with.

Jervois did well to restrict Mypo somewhat by regularly taking wickets, with Daniel Gilmour the standout bowler with 4/32 off ten overs.

In response it was the old guard that gave the best showing for Jervois, with veterans Gilmour (34), Brenton Schultz (27) and Ben Dawson (29) standing up at the top of the order.

Gilmour and Schultz put on 60 for the first wicket but after both departed it was always going to be difficult for the Bluds.

They ended up making 141 before they were bowled out.

Gene Robinson continued his superb form with the ball this season taking 3/15 to be the best of the Tiger bowlers.

Imperials v Wanderers

It was a low-scoring affair at Johnstone Park, and after being bowled out for just 88 batting first, Imperials produced an inspired bowling performance of their own to snatch another close victory.

Things could have been even worst for the Blues after another brilliant spell from Simon Williams (3/18) had Imperials reeling at 6/36 and quality batsman Tyson Wait, Julian Wait, Luke Harrowfield and Roger Puckridge all back in the sheds.

But they managed to squeeze a further 52 runs from their final four wickets, something that proved monumental in their eventual victory.

William Lipp (16) and Ben Trenordan (15) were the top scorers for Imperials batting at numbers seven and nine respectively.

Williams was again the best of the Wanderers bowlers but he received good support from Dallas Binney (3/16) and Darryl Robinson (2/17).

Wanderers would have more than fancied their chances of chasing the total down but Nathan Williams had them on the back foot immediately when he grabbed the first five wickets of the innings to reduce the visitors to 5/36.

Williams collected sensational figures of 10 overs, four maidens, 5/11 in a match-winning performance.

Imperials continued to apply pressure to Wanderers who fell in a heap, with only Phil Scheer standing up and showing reqsistance.

When Scheer was out for 32 with the score on 71, Wanderers collapsed to lose their last two wickets for just three runs to be all out for 74 as Imperials pulled off a famous victory.
