Successful first meet for young swimmers

07 Feb, 2012 07:47 AM
SWIMMING: Fifteen swimmers competed at Mount Pool in Mount Barker on Sunday, February 5, in what was a first time in the open competition for many swimmers.

Harry Stone, only six-years-old, had to wait four hours for his freestyle swim.

Harry finished in a time of 38.13s and was sixth overall over the distance of 33 and a third yards in the boys nine and under event, while in backstroke he was fifth overall.

Pippa Stolarski, 7, and in her first competitive meet, swam backstroke in the nine and under girls in a time of 46.92s.

Ella and Tess Huxtable, also in their first competition, took on three swims each.

Ella, 8, swam the 33 and a third yards freestyle in 53.59s, while Tess, 7, has a more competitive streak, putting in a fast 32.63s for her freestyle.

Ophelia Neuman, 10, swam like a veteran, taking on swims in three distances, even though this was her first carnival too.

Ophelia swam the IM, 100 yards freestyle as well as the short swims in each stroke.

Another first, Ebony Story, 18, became the leading medal winner for the club, with five medals and four personal best times.

In the 33 and a third fly, she gained a seven second and personal best being the most outstanding result, with up to a second in each of the other strokes.

Maralyn Polak, 49, took home four medals and four personal best times.

A second place in the 15 and over BBB Handicap was rewarding, but first in the open 133 1/3 yard IM handicap was very satisfying indeed.

Chris Herberston, 41, finally made it to a carnival and was really excited to place third in three swims, with some exciting times for her records.

Rick Stefaniak, 42, only competed in three swims resulting in one first for breaststroke and two second places in fly and freestyle.

Each swim was a personal best from being pushed by a new competitor.

Jordy Martin, 13, swam in six swims resulting in two medals.

Jordy, now pushing herself harder, placed second in 33 and a third yards backstroke and third in 33 and a third yards freestyle, with her freestyle time earning her a place in the 13 and under dash for cash.

Only the fastest five swimmers in the age group of 13 and under were selected.

She finished a whisker behind first and second and this was her time selected to swim this event.

Savannah Story, 12, took on a big program of seven swims.

Without previous times being recorded, it was hard to judge personal bests, but she is looking really good.

Savannah had to wait until the end of the day to find out she had another first. Not only was it announced as first place in the 13 and under BBB handicap, it was Savannah’s first gold medal.

Jack Stolarski, 12, new to competition, took on six swims.

In his 100 yard freestyle, Jack placed seventh in a time of 1.29.22s.

With a little stroke-tweaking, more improvement will be shown soon.

Madison Martin, 10, took on five swims with her best placings in the 33 and a third breaststroke and 100 yards freestyle.

Gabby Huxtable, 10, starting carnivals this season is really enjoying competition and took on five swims with a great time in the 100 yards freestyle of 1.33.65s.

Although Avril Herbertson is only eight, she took on five swims as well, placing fourth in 100 yards freestyle and fifth in 33 and a third yards fly, which was her first fly swim.
