Townies stumble

THE Murray Towns Cricket Association faced the Invitation XI in its first match of the Fleurieu and Districts Meyer Shield carnival at Kangaroo Island last Saturday.

The Invitation XI won the toss and decided to bat.

Harry Webb and Jason Daniell opened the bowling for Murray Towns.

Webb’s third over had Invitation opener Colin Bolto given a second chance at second slip.

Daniell’s third over was a double breakthrough, first bowling Keith Schoefield for five and then Bolto, who was looking dangerous, was then run out for 18.

Invitation’s score was 2/24.

Greg Bald and Dylan Bingos started to swing the game in the Invitation’s favour, after some assistance from Murray Towns’ poor catching.

Bald was dropped on 16 and Bingos was dropped twice in two overs.

At drinks Invitation was 2/57.

After the break Bald and Bingos upped the rate, bringing up 100 in the 25th over.

Scott Huxtable was then introduced and Murray Towns started to take some control.

Huxtable’s third over had Bald sky one to deep mid-on to be caught by Richard Boscence.

He scored 39 from 73 balls to see the score at 3/111.

Huxtable’s next over had Bingos caught behind for 48 from 55 balls.

Corey Knight’s fourth over began with the aggressive Jarrad Ross taking 10 runs from the first five balls, only to see his stumps laying on the ground after the final ball (5/139).

Heath Gurney, in trying to steal an extra run, found himself run out at the bowlers end after an excellent throw from fine leg by Boscence (6/148).

Running back with the flight of the ball from short fine leg, Simon Williams kept his eyes on the ball and took a great catch, giving Huxtable his third wicket and the Invitation XI were starting to struggle 7/150, with 16 overs to bat.

Webb was reintroduced with immediate success, to have Invitation at 8/151.

Jake Grenfell decided that attack was the best form of defence, dispatching Huxtable over the deep mid-wicket fence twice in the same over.

Grenfell and the patient Deckland Harvey secured a partnership of 31, before it was broken when Daniell bowled Harvey (8/181).

Grenfell and Josh Norman were able to take the score to 198, when Grenfell was out for 49 from just 42 balls with two sixes and four fours.

Huxtable was the pick of the bowlers with 3/39 from seven overs, while Daniell (2/43 from 10 overs) and Webb (1/17 from 10 overs) also bowled well.

Murray Towns needed to bat well to make the 199 needed for victory.

Simon Williams and Richard Boscence, in a solid partnership of 56, opened the batting.

The partnership was broken when Williams was bowled for 33 from 39 balls, with five fours (1/56).

Scott Huxtable joined Boscence, taking Murray Towns through to drinks to be 1/98 after 17 overs.

On 48, Boscence’s fine innings came to an end.

He hit the runs from 57 balls, with six fours and the score was 2/124 as he departed.

Captain Stewart Williss joined Huxtable, taking Murray Towns to the second break at 2/166 from 34 overs, needing only 33 for victory.

With the score on 188, Williss, who looked in total control, played one down the leg side only to see the wicket keeper dive to his left to hold onto a great catch.

Williss was out for 34 from 49 balls with five fours.

This brought in-form batsman Corey Knight to the crease.

Coming off a 100 last start, Knight looke out of form, making one not out from 14 balls faced.

With Huxtable in control at the other end, Murray Towns were able to score the 199 needed for victory with seven overs to spare.

Huxtable remained on 69 not out from 88 balls, with 11 fours.

Murray Towns v Kangaroo Island

Murray Towns won the toss and decided to bat in the match against Kangaroo Island.

Richard Boscence and Simon Williams again opened the batting, getting Murray Towns off to another solid start, despite Boscence being given a life on three.

Their partnership of 60 was broken when Williams, who had already cleared the rope three times, tried to do it once more, only to pick out the one fielder in the deep.

He was out for 33 from 35 balls with three sixes and one four.

Scott Huxtable joined Boscence, taking Murray Towns to drinks at 1/61.

On 13 Huxtable was dismissed to see the scores 2/95.

Stewart Williss joined Boscence, but on 12 the captain advanced at the bowler, only to be stumped (3/118).

On 47, Boscence was given his second life by the opposition.

From this drop the batsman ran the required three runs needed for his 50.

Boscence’s innings came to an end when he was bowled for 50 from 96 balls, with three fours (4/119).

Corey Knight and Luke Hocking took Murray Towns through to drinks at 34 overs (4/126).

The first over after the break Knight showed his intent hitting a six and two fours from the over.

After that over Murray Towns were not able to dominate the bowling the way they wanted to, making only 19 runs from seven overs.

In trying to up the run rate, the Knight-Hocking partnership (46) was broken when Knight got too aggressive.

After hitting the first ball of the over for six, he tried to do the same again, only to see the ball fall into the hands of a fielder (5/165).

Knight made 34 from 39 balls, with two sixes and two fours.

With only seven overs remaining and five wickets in hand Murray Towns would have been hoping to score around the 220 to 225 mark.

Dwayne Krollig joined Hocking at the crease.

Krollig, in a bid for quick runs, was bowled for two (6/176) with four overs remaining.

Sam Pfeiffer joined Hocking, who had been struggling to get bat on ball.

In a match-defining partnership of 38 runs, Hocking and Pfeiffer put Murray Towns into a strong position.

Hocking, who at one stage had nine runs from 35 balls, started to hit the ball hard and finished the innings on 41 not out from 53 balls, including two sixes and two fours.

Towards the end of the innings, Hocking scored his final 32 runs from just 18 balls.

Pfeiffer, who also took a while to get going after being one run from six balls, got his eye in to finish on 16 not out from 14 balls, with two fours.

Murray Towns finished at 6/214.

Harry Webb took the new ball and got Murray Towns off to a great start with his first delivery, with Dwayne Krollig taking a gem of a catch low to his left in gully.

At 1/0 off the first ball, KI were in trouble.

But in the fourth over KI’s Colin Billett took 14 from the over.

The sixth over saw Mike Guerson take eight from the over to have KI at 1/28 and looking the goods.

Webb, in the middle of a fine spell, removed the dangerous Billett for 14 to see the score at 2/28.

Three overs later Luke Hocking removed another batsman (3/35).

Rick Morriss joined Guerson in a partnership of 25, that was broken when Krollig removed Morriss for 11 (4/60).

At the drinks break KI were 4/63, and needed to build a partnership in the middle session.

After the break Guerson and Tim Johnson went about building a partnership of 42.

Johnson’s innings ended on 24 when Scott Huxtable was introduced.

The next ball the new batsman skied one straight up at mid off where Stewart Williss run around and took a great catch over his left shoulder to see the score 6/102.

Tom Wurst joined Guerson, taking KI to drinks at 6/131.

First over after the break Wurst, on 13, hit one to deep mid wicket off Huxtable, only to see it put down and also go for four.

Guerson and Wurst went about putting KI into a winning position.

Hocking was reintroduced and with his third ball he removed Wurst for 35 from 51 balls (7/177).

Corey Knight then picked up a wicket to see the score 8/185.

KI needed 30 runs from 27 balls to win the match and it was up to Guerson, who had batted through the whole innings, to get the ‘Islanders’ home.

Another wicket to Hocking had the score at 9/189 and KI needed 21 runs from just 12 balls.

Guerson was under pressure to hit boundaries or get twos to keep the strike.

This caused confusion between the batsmen, and Guerson was run out for a chanceless 85, with one six and eight fours from 135 balls.

The best bowlers for Murray Towns were Hocking with 3/25 from 5.1 overs, Huxtable (2/30 from 6 overs) and Webb, who bowled splendidly to take 2 /9 from nine overs.

Final - Murray Towns v Hills

Before the players took the field a minute’s silence was held for the late Harvey Dawes, who passed away on the Sunday night before the final.

Dawes was the Hills manager for a great number of years and had plenty to do with Fleurieu and Districts cricket.

He will be sadly missed.

Murray Towns won the toss and decided to bat.

Boscence and Williams again opened the batting and after a solid start Boscence, who had been struggling to score freely, charged the bowler only to bunt it to cover (1/28).

Boscence’s 12 came from 47 balls.

Huxtable joined Williams, getting to the drinks break at 1/49.

The run rate was a little slow but wickets in hand was a bonus.

Williams and Huxtable’s partnership (29) was broken when Williams, for the second time in two days, picked out the one fielder in the deep at deep mid wicket to be caught for 35 from 53 balls (2/57).

Williss joined Huxtable in a partnership of 35, taking the score to 92, before Huxtable flicked on of his pads straight to the fielder in front of square to be caught for 33 from 36 balls (three fours).

Knight joined Williss, but eight balls before drinks Williss again advanced at the spinner, only to see an edge bounce towards the keeper and in a close call he was out stumped (4/110).

Hocking joined Knight and played Murray Towns through to the drinks break.

They needed to increase the scoring rate after drinks to post a competitive score of around 220 plus.

Knight and Hocking slowly worked their way to the 47th over, taking the score to 4/176.

In the 48th over Knight decided it was time to explode, hitting the first two balls a long way out of the ground, then hitting two two’s, followed by another massive six, then a single to keep the strike.

A total of 23 came from the over and all of a sudden it was 4/199 and maybe 220 was a chance again.

To the crowd’s disappointment the first ball of the next over ended Knight’s innings, and he was bowled for 64 from 80 balls, with three sixes and one four (5/199).

Knight was unable to score freely early in his innings and at one stage he was five runs from 30 balls, meaning he scored 59 runs from just 50 balls once he got going.

In the hunt for quick runs Krollig came and went (6/199).

Hocking and Pfeiffer took the score along to 6/208 from 50 overs.

Hocking finished with 37 not out from 42 balls with one six and one four.

Murray Towns was about 15 to 20 runs short and needed to bowl and field better than they had all weekend to bring the shield home.

Murray Towns needed early wickets against a Hills side with a powerful batting line-up.

Harry Webb and Dwayne Krollig opened the bowling and in the third over Webb, who had only conceded 26 runs from 19 overs so far in the tournament, had 10 runs taken from the over.

Another 10 runs from Webb’s next over and Hills were off to a flyer at 0/29 from five overs.

It was not until Daniell’s second over that Murray Towns got the first breakthrough, when Dylan Brown was bowled for 27 (1/66).

Huxtable’s introduction saw both batsmen struggle and Hayden Read was given a life on 47.

Brother Rowan Read was also given his first life on 28, when players appealed for a caught behind that was given not out.

However the batsman was out of his crease, but the keeper didn’t take the bales off, because he thought the batsman had been given out caught behind.

On 48 Rowan Read was given his second reprieve when he was dropped in the gully.

From that point, Murray Towns where not able to get another chance.

The Murray Towns bowlers where unable to bowl a consistent line and lengh, with only Daniell taking a wicket (1/20 from four overs).

Knight bowled well 0/30 from 10 with one chance and Huxtable, 0/26 from seven overs, had two chances.

Hills batsmen Hayden Read finished with 83 not out from 125 balls with two sixes and 10 fours, while brother Rowan finished with 84 not out from 98 balls, with one six and 10 fours.

Hills only lost one wicket and had seven overs to spare.

Murray Towns played well over the weekend and had a big chance after making 6/208 in the final, but where beaten by the better team on the day.
