AFTER dominating the equestrian ring on seven-year-old Paint Lakota at the Mount Gambier Horse Trials two weeks ago, 15-year-old Jade Kluske is well on her way towards her dream of Olympic glory.
Kluske said taking out the first place in the CNC one-star, two-day equestrian event was amazing considering she was the youngest rider in her class.
“It is open to anyone in Australia to enter,” she said.
“Olympic riders also compete on the horses they are training up for the Olympics.
“It was quite a big event for myself as I’m trying to qualify for the Adelaide International Horse Trials next year.
“It is probably the biggest event Australia as it is the only four-star event that is at Olympic level.”
Kluske grew up around horses and began riding by herself at the age of 12 and was involved in pony club before moving on to equestrian riding.
“Dad has always been into horses,” she said.
“He would put me on the saddle in front of him and ride around with me.
“My family weren’t into the equestrian stuff by they have supported me and I couldn’t do it with out them.”
Kluske said her passion for the equestrian arena began when she was 13-years-old. “I used to groom for a lady, Mia Allen, who was an equestrian,” she said.
“She is one of the people who inspired me and helped me to get where I am now.
“Through her I met Megan Jones, who was the 2008 Beijing silver medallist.
“She inspired me to get to the top.”
Last year Kluske made the most of an opportunity to work with Ms Jones for around eight weeks, which helped her advance through the grades.
The work eventually led to a school-based apprenticeship with Ms Jones at Hahndorf, which consists of elite performance horse training.
“It’s great, especially to work under Megan as well, it’s such an experience,” she said.
Father Mark Kluske said he was amazed at how far Jade had come in such a short period of time.
“There wouldn’t be many other 15-year-olds to win the one star,” he said.
Mr Kluske said the next step for Jade is the Reynella Horse Trials to be held next weekend.
He said these trials would give her the opportunity to compete at the national level and international level.
