THE Mallee Football League’s favourite son Rodney ‘Rocket’ Maynard had a fairytale finish to his career on Saturday, playing his final game in an A grade premiership for the Lameroo Hawks.
After sterling careers for both the Adelaide Crows and Norwood football clubs, Maynard has spent the last decade playing country football for his home town.
“Rocket” was close to pulling up the boots at the end of last season, but it was another premiership that drove him to continue his career, which also features six mail medals in the MFL.
As it turned out, it was a fairytale finish.
Maynard’s Hawks started as underdogs against the formidable BDT Crows.
But the veteran’s Hawks downed the Crows by 32 points and Maynard finished with his sixth premiership for Lameroo.
The veteran played a key role in the forward lines for the Hawks, with many possessions, and was in the top five best players of the game.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to finish my career,” he said.
“All the boys had a job today and there were no passengers. “And to top it off our B grade boys got over the line too, which is just fantastic.”
The 41-year-old, who is extremely passionate about football at all levels, from the AFL right down to the MFL, paid tribute to the game he loves.
I have so many great memories but it’s time for me to take a step back now and allow my body to recuperate a little,” he said.
It was Lameroo’s first A grade flag since 2002 and their eighth in total.
