THE Mallee Football League acknowledged the season’s best players at its Mail Medal count and presentation night at Pinnaroo on Monday.
About 180 guests including players, officials, family and friends attended the ceremony.
Lameroo ruckman Ben Grieger took out the 2009 Mail Medal for the first time in his career.
The talented 23-year-old polled a total of 24 votes, with Border Downs Tintinara footballer Josh Keller only three votes behind.
“I didn’t really expect to win,” he said.
“It came to a close finish.”
The win capped off a good night for Grieger, who also took out the FlowFM Footballer of the Year Award.
The ruckman has played for Lameroo Football Club for most of his life, but had a seven-year stint playing for West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League.
Grieger played all his junior games for Lameroo and has only been back at the club for the past two years.
“I will still be playing for Lameroo next season, but I would like to get back into football in town (Adelaide),” he said.
Lameroo Football Club won the triple prize as its footballers won the reserves and senior colts medals as well.
The Moyle Medal, awarded to the best reserve player, was won by Rodney Maynard and the Murdoch Medal for best senior colt was won by Miles Sumner.
Pinnaroo’s Tasman Hawthorne won the senior colts goal-kicking award with 51 goals.
Greg Haslam, Lameroo, took out the reserves goal kicking with 45 goals and Drew Crane, of Murrayville, won the A grade goal kicking with 100 majors.
The Rodney Maynard award for best under-19 player went to Karoonda’s Josh Rudiger on 31 votes, just nine votes ahead of Hayden Schilling, BDT, on 22.
The Marg Graham Memorial Shield was won by Lameroo on 284 points, ahead of Peake on 254. John Miell, Border Downs Tintinara, took out the Junior Coach of the Year Award, while Karoonda’s Corey Smelt won the Senior Coach of the Year Award.
The West Adelaide Under Age Player of the Year went to Dylan Ribbons, from Pinnaroo, and the Under 15 Player of Championship was awarded to Nick Hyde of Lameroo.
