High-scoring Hawks undefeated

16 May, 2008 01:56 PM
LAMEROO defeated challengers Pinnaroo by 39 points in an entertaining, and high scoring, Mallee A grade football match on Saturday.

The Hawks were slow to get on the scoreboard early as both teams were getting the ball inside the 50 metre arc.

However, Lameroo was transferring play at every opportunity and moving the ball quickly and methodically into the forward line, setting up shots on goal by centreing the ball to a leading player in space.

Inaccuracy was not a problem, allowing Lameroo to finish the first term with an impressive score.

In a free flowing game 16 goals were kicked in the first term with spectators enjoying a great game of football.

The Hawks continued their running game in the second quarter with Rodney Maynard, Matt Ridgway, Dan Wohling, and Chris Philbey sharing the ball well with great accuracy.

In what was shaping up to be the contest of the day, Hawks’ full forward Chris Philbey was up against Brayden Thomas, while Roo defenders Allen Halls and Nick Westphalen were working hard to keep their side in the game.

In the second half the Pinnaroo midfield lifted its work-rate, getting the ball inside 50m with a series of handballs from Sunny Vogt, Wade Nickolls, Mathew Wilson and Clint Muster.

They had trouble converting, until a handball from Heath Bosley to Craig Gum saw Pinnaroo kick a much-needed goal.

Brad Zerk, across half back for the Hawks, was making scoring difficult for the home side, while at the other end Wohling continued to have a good day out for the Hawks and Shane Agelis proved to be a good addition to the Lameroo side.

At the centre clearances the Nickolls brothers were winning the tap on many occasions, but neither side was allowing clean take aways from the middle, with easy kicks difficult to find.

A better quarter by the home side was wasted with inaccurate kicking, in contrast to the Hawks, who continued to use the best option in front of goal, achieving a 4.2 return to the Roos 2.5.

Pinnaroo continued to apply pressure to Lameroo, with a good tackle by Giles Oster on the half back line along with several more by Sunny Vogt.

The home side came home with a wet sail, outscoring the top side in the last quarter.

After several wasted opportunities by the home side in front of goal, Lameroo kicked some late goals to run out easy winners in a high scoring game.

BDT Crows too good for Magpies

Border Downs Tintinara played their first game at Coonalpyn for the season against Karoonda, a team which is hit with injuries, but getting better each week.

BDT had a lot of the football in the first quarter with a slick moving forward line that produced five different goal kickers.

Karoonda were undermanned, with some of their playmakers out and a couple of team-mates playing both A and B grade on the day.

The Magpies performance in the second quarter was good even when BDT outscored them.

Karoonda were able to block quite a few of BDT’s attacks, with Scott Huxtable and Luke Hocking playing good sweeping roles across halfback.

The scores at half-time were BDT 9.7 to Karoonda 3.3.

After a rev up from the coach BDT came out in the third quarter and kicked three quick goals to break Karoonda’s resolve.

A 12-goal quarter by BDT saw James Simpson, Lachlan Richardson, Aron Richards and Jack Zacker kicking multiple goals.

Richardson kept up his good form dominating around the ground in the quarter and either getting the hard ball or linking with brother Josh to push the ball forward.

In the last quarter Simpson kick three more goals and Josh Richardson two.

Reece Boughen and Brodie Chinner tried hard for Karoonda, but BDT’s half backs Luke Remfrey and Ben Hooper repelled the ball well starting quite a few of their attacks.

The final scores were BDT 28.15 to Karoonda 4.3.

Simpson kicked eight goals for BDT while Lachlan Richardson kicked four and Josh Richardson and Aron Richards kicked three each.

Karoonda’s only multiple goal scorer was Nicholas Kambuts with three.

Best for BDT was Lachlan and Josh Richardson, Remfrey, Webb and Hooper.

Best for Karoonda was Chinner, Huxtable, Hocking, Boughen and Mark Burnett.
