A large crowd gathered at Jervois on Saturday to witness Tailem Bend’s first game of the season against arch rivals Jervois.
In overcast conditions the Tailem boys took it up to the reigning premiers for the first quarter before Jervois took control for the next two.
Jervois kicked with a two to three goal breeze in the opening term but was under pressure immediately from a spirited Tailem Bend.
Tailem scored the first major through Ashleigh Bastian, only for Jervois to reply immediately through Mick Moller.
As the quarter rolled on Jervois had more possession of the ball, but through poor disposal and Tailem’s pressure and congestion in their forward lines, the Bluds struggled to convert.
By quarter time the score was 2.6 to 1.3, in favour of the home side, but it was a lack-lustre performance from Jervois.
The first 10 minutes of the second term was much the same as the first quarter. Turnovers and poor disposals by both teams resulted in very few scoring opportunities and scrambly football.
The introduction to the game of Jeremy Rigney and James Cobbledick provided the spark Jervois needed and when Brad Schmidt snagged a goal at the 20 minute mark, Jervois had kicked five goals in seven minutess and earned a 34 point lead.
Late goals to Matthew Linke for Tailem and Russell Jarvis for Jervois allowed Jervois to maintain a 34 point lead at half-time.
After the break Jervois continued with more of the same.
Sam Mahony and Chad Beard both goaled within three minutess to extend Jervois’ lead.
Dylan Hogarth, who was providing plenty of drive from the middle for Tailem, goaled to stem the flow before a couple of altercations livened the game a little.
The rest of the term was all Jervois as they scored five unanswered goals and took total control of the game.
For the second week running Jervois dominated the third quarter of the match, only to come out after three quarter time and be overrun.
The Eagles took charge in the first half of the last term, kicking four goals before Jervois scored its first goal at the 20 minute mark.
Although the match was over by this stage, Jervois coach Mahony must be concerned by this problem, especially as they face Ramblers this week.
By the end of the game Jervois had ran out comfortable 59-point victors.
Best players were hard to find for Jervois as players dropped in and out of the game.
James Jagodnik, Jason Bayliss and Mick Moller were named as Jervois’ best, while for Tailem Bend, Damien Raidis and Dylan Hogarth stood out, with Derek Williams also named for his effort.
