RIVER Murray football clubs will break with tradition to play an Anzac Day match and a night game this weekend.
River Murray Football League president Mick O’Hara said it had been a while since a night game had been played.
“The league didn’t decide (about the night match) the clubs themselves did,” Mr O’Hara said.
“(The league) is in support of anything different to draw a crowd.”
The twilight league match will start at 5pm between Imperials and Ramblers, at Johnstone Park.
Imperials Football Club secretary Olivia Scholz said the club hoped the twilight game would attract more supporters.
“It was a huge success some 10 years ago and we’re hoping for the same reponse,” she said.
“It is also attractive to our young families who have both parents playing on the day, to support both the netball and the football clubs.”
The Anzac Day match will be played between Mypolonga and Mannum.
“It’s just to see how it goes, it’s a rivalry sort of game and they are honouring their past Anzacs and they invite any families of Anzacs to attend,” Mr O’Hara said.
He said the league would consider holding the Anzac Day match again if it was a success.
“The first three weeks (of the season) the crowds have been exceptional, so while we have got a crowd coming along we want to give them something interesting,” Mr O’Hara said. Only senior sides will play Anzac Day, which incorporates the Armfield Martin Noble Cup, with juniors playing on Saturday.
The day will begin at 12 noon and will include a rememberance service.
The Mypolonga Football Club will also be celebrating its 80 Years Strong reunion with events to be held all weekend.
