IT wasn’t until after half-time that Mannum gained the ascendency over a dogged Meningie side to run out winners by 53 points to open this year’s account in the River Murray Football League.
The Roos struggled in the first half and encountered a determined Meningie defence that prevented them from holding the ball in the forward zone.
Mannum appeared to be tense, and failed to take the first option on several occasions.
Strong tackling by Meningie was rewarded with numerous holding the ball decisions.
After half-time Mannum began to display confidence and teamwork, showing patches of good play as they gradually got on top of the determined Bears.
To Meningie’s credit they battled throughout the game and will benefit from the hit out.
The win came at a cost to the Roos, with serious injuries to several key players including Justin Maloney and Paul Sarno, who both started the game in excellent form.
New forward Josh Gould received a serious knee injury and Jimmy Smith was restricted to playing in the goal square.
This will seriously test the depth of the Mannum players in the coming weeks.
Mannum supporters were treated to a brilliant marking and possession-gathering game from Andrew Warnest, to be easily best on ground.
He was ably assisted by strong performances from the tenacious Shane Harte and the ever-reliable Ben Quinn.
James Smith, playing under extreme difficulties, was important with four goals, as was new player Mark Dearman with three.
Young players Daniel Thiele, Jarrod Woodward and Sam Schleuter gave creditable performances and will be important players for the club.
Meningie’s defence gave a lion-hearted effort superbly led by Peter Reichelt, who was ably assisted by Chris Lawson.
Andrew Cuneen was a big possession winner and was particularly strong at close quarters with his aggression and tackling.
Tim Saddlier was a winner across centre and Chris O’Hara lead a winning ruck combination.
Josh Robinson and Mark Turner were valuable forwards with two goals each.
