 Tigers maul Bears at Meningie

Tigers maul Bears at Meningie

10 Apr, 2008 09:33 AM
THESE two teams have enjoyed tight games in the past at the Bears ground, but not this time.

The Tigers showed they are a tougher unit this year.

Meningie started well and had the first major thanks to poor kicking for goal by the Tigers but they then kicked 15 goals to 2 in the first half with Brad Martin kicking 8.

The Bears’ defence was struggling to cope with the constant attack.

Mypolonga’s Joe Pedl-er was outstanding to watch and worth coming to see.

His take out from the centre to half forward was brilliant all day.

He ran all day and has the skills to be a match-winner.

The third quarter started much the same, Meningie kicked one goal while Mypolonga had five with Martin’s total now at 11 needing three more to break the club record in the last quarter.

Meningie coach Jamie Gibbs moved players all day but with young Cunneen, Reichelt and Lawson in defence they stood tall and showed guts and contested every hard ball.

The Bears played some good footy in the second half with more run in the legs than previous years and the last quarter kept the Tigers to three goals to one and Martin goal-less.

The Bears had more options and weren’t afraid to switch the play out of defence.

Meningie is a young side, but Bomber Gibbs knows how to develop young players.

There are some good signs the club will be competitive in 2008.

New captian Evan Smith worked hard and tried to generate play from the centre at times with success.

Poor kicking in front of goal let the Tigers down for a higher percentage win.

But with their key recruits Mypolonga will be a strong side in the league this year.
