THE River Murray Football League executive committee asked all seven clubs to nominate their top five players of all time and their top three players for the last decade.
The clubs were given four months notice and the nominations were announced on September 7 at the Mail Medal presentation.
The clubs held numerous meetings and consulted with as many of their old time players as possible and it caused considerable debate during the course of the season.
The club’s were honoured with certificates containing the names of the players that will be on display in their club rooms.
The following players were nominated:
Imperials
Norm Weibricht: Mail Medalist in 1940, 1947 and 1948.
Les Stone: Mail Medalist in 1953.
Ron Hutchinson: Mail Medalist in 1949 and 1951. Won the club’s best and fairest six times.
Greg Zadow: Mail Medalist in 1984 and 1986.
Brett Lienert: Mail Medalist in 1995 and 1999.
Top three from 2000-2009: Brad Shiell, Simon Roesler and Mathew Seyers.
Jervois
Merv Lokan: 19 years playing service-captain of eight premiership sides 1932 to1939.
Bill Lokan: 1958 and 1959 Mail Medalist (one with Tailem Bend and one with Jervois).
Colin Gibbs: 1961 Mail Medalist
Lyall Kelly: 22 years playing service, champion ruckman and former captain.
Neil Nankervill: 104 goal in 1985, former captain and best and fairest winner.
Top three from 2000-2009: Sam Mahony, Russell Jarvis and Scott Baxter.
Mannum
Keith Trewartha: First league game in 1934 at the age of 14, RMFL representative in 1936, 1938 and 1939. He finished playing in the 1953 grand final and won numerous best and fairests. Bill Banks: 220 A grade games. Best and fairest 1961, 1962 and 1963. Premiership player 1955 and 1956.
David Haythorpe: 302 A grade games and won the Mail Medal in 1967. He was named best and fairest in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1974.
Mark Warnest: 82 games and was named best and fairest in 1977, 1978 and 1982. He was also RMFL representative numerous times.
Ben Quinn: 109 games - Mail Medal in 2002, 2003 premiership player and captain 2007, 2008 and 2009. Top three from 2000-2009: Ben Quinn, Colin Berry and Daniel Zadow.
Meningie
Wayne Sanders: Mail Medal 1958 and 1960, captain coach at the age of 18. He was the coach in 1957, 1981 and 1982
Mick O’Hara: 264 games, best and fairest 1976 and 1977, captain coach 1985.
Jamie Gibbs: 297 games, six times best and fairest, club captain 1984, 1985, 1988 and 1992.
Robert Scott: Leading goalkicker in 1979 and1981, 113 goals in 1979.
David McKechnie: Won the 1989 Mail Medal, RMFL captain in 1988 -1991, best and fairest 1988.
Top three from 2000-2009: Kym White, Evan Smith and Adam Morris.
Mypolonga
Jack Foster: 1938 Mail Medal, former best and fairest, twice a premiership player
Bill Martin: 1951 Mail Medal, four times a best and fairest winner.
Kent Rohde: 209 games, five-time best amd fairest winner, four-time premiership player.
James Zadow: 152 games, twice best and fairest, four-time premiership player.
Randall Pearce: 88 games, three times best and fairest.
Top three from 2000-2009: Andy Weinman, James Pedler and Joe Pedler.
Ramblers
Bohdan Cybulka: Mail Medal 1975 (Mail Medal at Tailem Bend 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972, captain 1975 to 1979 coach 1975 to 1984 and 1990 to1991.
Bruce Kuchel: 238 games, four times best and fairest. Captain 1969 to 1971.
Bradley Paech: Mail Medal 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, best and fairest 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1985. Ron Liebelt: Mail Medal 1974, 208 games, best and fairest 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1974.
Delton Schiller: 304 games, best and fairest 1983, six-time premiership player
Top three from 2000-2009: Mark Marchetti, Clint Girardi and Liam O’Neil.
Tailem Bend
Bill Lokan: Mail Medal 1958 and 1959 (one with Tailem Bend, one with Jervois)
Geoff Lokan: Mail Medal 1962, 1963 and 1964.
Bohdan Cybulka: Mail Medal 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 (Mail Medal at Ramblers 1975).
Terry Connolly: Mail Medal 1976, 300 game player.
Mervyn Kartinyeri: Mail Medal 1997, 2004 and 2005, four-time best and fairest.
