SPEEDWAY: Current and two times Australian 360 sprintcar champion Ryan Jones made a spectacular debut in the All Stars Series by dominating the 30-lap final to claim round one of the series at the Moore Engineering Murray Bridge Speedway.
After starting from the outside of the front row Jones got the jump on pole-sitter Troy Little and was never headed from that point.
In fact Jones led by over half a lap prior to a caution for debris coming out on lap 19.
Jones said he was pleased with his performance in the big race.
“The All Stars is a great deal,” he said.
“I must say it was a privilege to race against the likes of Troy Little and come out on top.”
Second across the line was Sydneysider Troy Little but it was a controversial result as Little’s machine failed to make weight on several occasions following the final before it was eventually cleared a mere three pounds over.
Third went to last season’s rookie of the year Colin Brooks with Shannon Barry and Mark Caruso completing the top five.
Earlier in the night heat victories were secured by Ricky Barrand, Phil Lock, Barry, Little, Brooks and Jones, while Little survived the unique pursuit format to claim the pole for the final.
Unfortunately the B-main had to be cancelled due a shower of rain that passed over the speedway just as the cars were being pushed off.
The only casualties of the night were Barrand and Adam Currie, who both rolled during the second round of heat races.
Round one of the MJS Tree & Stump Removal Street Stock Series was also held on the program with eight hectic heat races conducted prior to the 20 lap A-main.
After a gruelling event South East resident Steve Gartner emerged the winner ahead of Craig Buchanan and Sam Brumfield.
The lightning sprints also provided some top class racing as they contested two 15-lap feature races but it was Graham Knuckey who emerged victorious in both events after winning the opening encounter from the front before storming through the pack to claim race two.
Second place in race one went to Brendan Quinn but his second start was a lot more forgetful as he inverted his machine in turn two.
Second place in race two was secured by Graham Knuckey’s cousin Darryl, while Ben Hall rounded out the top three.
The event also had the first appearance of the Murray Bridge season for the the awesome V8 super sedans, but unfortunately only five cars fronted.
Despite the small numbers the racing between the top three was extremely tight.
The opening heat of the night went to “Bustling” Bill Miller while heat two went the way of six-time South Australian champion Steve Stewart.
Gil Worthley, who was making his first start of the season, was also on the pace as he drove the Kym Schubert owned Commodore to a second and third place result in the heats before taking out the feature event.
