A PHYSICAL A grade River Murray netball match was contested on Saturday between Mannum and Imperials in perfect conditions, with the outcome giving neither side the two points.
The first quarter saw a hard fought battle, as both teams were determined for second place on the ladder.
Imperials won the toss and elected the centre pass, converting the first goal of the match.
Mannum replied, and from here the quarter went goal for goal.
Pressure was applied from both teams, with Mannum defenders Andrea Wegener, Katrina Reschke and Kate Murdoch working overtime.
Kylie Burns, Sharon Taylor and Dallas Huxtable in defence for Imperials also had their work cut out.
A brilliant shooting display was seen from Jenna Daniels and Meaghan Gillespie for Imperials, and a matching spectacle from Tracy and Amy Loechel for Mannum. Imperials lead by one goal at the break, 18 to 17.
The second quarter was tightly contested, with Mannum’s Tanya Thiele and Imperials’ Penny Fielke battling it out all over the court.
Shelby Rosenzweig at wing attack for Mannum held her own against opponent Dallas Huxtable, feeding with precision to her team-mates.
Murdoch’s drive into attack was vital, as was her defensive pressure.
However, opponent Carrie Daniels still made position well around the circle.
Both teams’ goalers shot accurately for the quarter, with Mannum’s Amy Loechel netting 10 from 10.
Mannum’s slightly higher conversion rate gave them the edge at the long break.
Imperials hit the court running in the third term, capitalising on Mannum’s unforced errors.
Burns took several timely intercepts for Imperials, as did Reschke at goal defence for Mannum.
Daniels became the focal point for Imperials, being fed confidently by Fielke around the circle.
Imperials played a better quarter to lead by seven at three quarter time.
Mannum was fired up in the final quarter.
Thiele drove well in the mid court for Mannum, as did Fielke for Imperials.
Strong rebounding by Wegener and Reschke, and intercepts from Mannum’s attackers allowed Mannum to sneak back into the game.
In the last few minutes of the quarter, it came back to the battle of the goalers.
At the final whistle, scores were 64 all, with both teams having had an even 78 attempts at goal.
Goaler statistics were Amy Loechel 29 goals from 33 shots, Tracy Loechel 35 from 45, Jenna Daniels 35 from 40, Megan Gillespie 29 from 38.

A reserves
Imperials were far too good for Mannum, defeating them convincingly and stamping their authority on the competition.
Both teams started with turnovers at their own centre passes, due to unforced errors.
Imperials then got the run on and found their targets.
Imperials had many more scoring opportunities than Mannum, with Sarah March shooting superbly, creating space and using her height to get rebounds.
Defender Rachel Mobbs got many of the rebounds, sending the ball back into attack.
Imperials led 15-6 at quarter time.
Mannum goal shooter Melissa Gregory became more confident with her shots and became Mannum’s target in the goal circle.
Imperials goal shooter Alyce Clarke was also shooting accurately, although her opponent, Kate Murdoch, had good deflections when the ball was being passed in. Deanna Lush was having a great game at centre, being strong to the ball, tight in defence and always delivering the ball to her players.
Not even an inspirational second effort from Mannum’s Kellie Schmidt could get Mannum back into the game.
Mannum made many changes for the second half, with Shelby Rosenzweig coming on and making an immediate impact on the game, creating space and shooting accurately.
Imperials also swapped a few players.
Mannum’s Di Fromm to goal keeper was tight, and contested well, gaining some good deflections.
Imperials brought on Katrina Gogel to goal attack for the final quarter, while they continued on their winning way.
Final scores were Imperials 67 to Mannum 39

B grade
Both teams started strongly, however Imperials had the edge with good shooting by Danielle Roselt-Leckie and Amanda Hunt to lead by six goals at the break.
Mannum’s Kelly Gladigau and Sarah Hamnett increased the pressure through the mid court and fed well into the goalers.
Imperials goal keeper Erin Lienert and Mannum goal shooter Anastasia Kendall were having a great battle, with Kendall starting to find the ring.
Half time scores were Mannum 18 to Imperials 30.
Imperials made changes at the long break with Wilson moving to wing attack and Alison Daniels coming on as centre, while Mannum remained unchanged.
Mannum’s Natasha Schultz started increasing her work rate, fighting hard for the ball while at the other end of the court Krystal Owen and Julia Smith were slowing Imperials’ scoring opportunities.
Both teams came out firing in the final quarter, which resulted in tussles throughout the court.
Julie Hunt for Mannum continued to apply pressure to stop Imperials’ drive to the ring.
Mannum outscored Imperials by two goals this quarter, however Imperials goalers played a solid, consistent game with high accuracy.
At the final whistle, scores were Mannum 37 to Imperials 52.

C grade
In the first quarter of the match Mannum were moving well, but Imperials were moving better.
Imperials scored the first goal through Chloe Lipp, who was in fine form.
Imps goal defence Donna Borchardt was defending well, making Jess Chadwick work extremely hard for every goal opportunity.
Mannum’s goalers were shooting at 81 per cent, and against any other team this might be enough.
The Imperials defenders were exceptional, taking rebound after rebound and feeding it straight down the court to Lipp and Rochelle Schenser.
At the end of the first quarter, Imps were ahead 15 to nine.
The second quarter was as even as the first, with both teams scoring exactly the same on paper.
The Mannum goalers were shooting better at 90 per cent, but the Imps defence made it hard to get opportunities to shoot for goal, as they turned the ball over again and capitalised.
Reichstein, in centre for Mannum, and Leah Frazer for Imps were having a great match up.
Both were running well and moving well, chasing down every ball they could.
The third quarter was what really gave it away for Mannum.
Imps were still tight and running strong and Mannum just did not seem to have the drive.
Imps tightened up and Mannum had no answers and this allowed Imps to double the goals scored.
In the final quarter Mannum found a new lease of life in the goal ring.
They were moving well and feeding into the circle, but Mannum still could not capitalise.
The Imperials defence was tighter, and despite Mannum’s best efforts, they could not turn this game around.
The final scores saw Imperials defeat Mannum by 15 goals in a hard fought match.

17 and under division one
In great netball conditions Imperials outplayed Mannum.
Mannum struggled to find their rhythm initially, giving Imperials the opportunity to create some quick turnovers.
Through their tight defence and accurate shooting Imperials took an early lead at quarter-time.
Mannum settled in the second quarter.
Mannum wing attack Jasmine Woods was driving and feeding well into goals.
Imperials goal defence Meaghan Watkins and Mannum goal attack Lucinda Kendall were having a great tussle.
Mannum were unable to reduce the gap, Imperials held their six- goal lead at half time.
Imperials came out strong and applied pressure all over the court, forcing Mannum to make mistakes early in the third quarter.
Imperials goal attack Zoe Gepp was playing a great game, driving hard into the goal circle and shooting accurately.
Mannum’s center Shaidan Rochow kept offering for her team, but Imperials seemed to want the ball more, chasing every loose ball and using it to further their lead at the end of the third quarter, 35-24.
Imperials kept up their form in the final quarter, Mannum were unable to keep up with the fast pace.
In the end Imperials outplayed Mannum, running out winners by 14 goals.
Final scores were 49 Imperials to 35 Mannum.

17 and under division two
With perfect weather, Mannum and Imperials were both fired up to win this match.
In the first quarter Mannum made many great plays.
Mannum goalers Tamika O’Malley and Ashleigh Mobbs made the Imperials goal defence Kaitelyn Freeman and goal keeper Hayley Griffith work extremely hard for any rebounds they could get.
Both teams went goal for goal and then Mannum took and utilised a turn over and were up by one goal at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Mannum goal defence Ashleigh Vivian made extra pressure onto the goal attack Rhiannon Morrison and turned over many passages of play. Mannum’s wing attack Karina Harris moved well against Imps wing defence Samantha Leahy to receive the centre pass and then was passing nicely to the goalers making sure every pass counted.
With Ebony Story at centre for Imperials making great leads, Mannum centre Madeline Henry ad to work hard to stop Story’s pace.
In the third quarter Imperials put extra pressure on all players at both ends and made many turnovers to be one in front at the end of the term.
Morrison and Freeman made sure every goal went in when they had the chance.
Mannum defenders Vivian and Danae Male worked hard all game and made the goalers work side to side of the goal circle.
Mannum’s wing defence Carlie Lowe made many great interceptions against wing attack Samantha Leahy for Imperials.
Lowe kept up the pressure all game and made anything in the centre third hard to get through.
The last quarter Imperials played hard and had big efforts by every player.
Mannum lost some momentum and this caused several intercepts by the Imperial players.
This game was played with great passion from both teams and Imperials ended up winning by eight.
Final scores were Imperials 39 to Mannum 31.

15 and under division one
Mannum hosted the day, but it was Imperials who started the game decisively, with their goal attack shooting an accurate 12 goals from 13 attempts.
Mannum’s attack line warmed into the game, but the first quarter was over with Imperials holding a six-goal advantage.
The Mannum side regrouped and had a better second quarter, with their goalers shooting strongly.
Mannum’s defence applied pressure, but the roll was with the Imperial side and they finished the half with an 11-goal lead.
To Mannum’s credit they dug deep and had great centre pass drives and started turning the ball over in the defence keeping the third quarter in check.
Mannum’s centre drive was consistent through out the game.
Mannum never gave up, but to Imperials credit their constant pressure allowed them to finish off the game strongly with an 18-goal win.

15 and under division two
In perfect conditions, Imperials center Danielle Monjean took the first centre pass only to have it quickly turned around by Mannum and with Mannum’s goal shooter Narelle Simons scoring the first goal of the game.
The first few minutes of the game were goal for goal, but Mannum’s Cassidie Rochow and Laura Mildwaters increased the pressure in the Imperials goal ring.
Sending down the ball to Mannum’s goalers Narelle Simons and Karissa Kendall.
Great long shots were played by Imperials goal attack Monjean, Mannum held a good lead quarter time.
The second quarter saw Imperials bring Courtney Short into goal shooter, replacing Erin Lindsay, who went into wing defence.
However this was not enough to stop the strong defensive work from Mannum all over the court through their centre court players Rachel Hartley, Sheree Polkinghorne and Jess Hancock.
Mannum made changes coming into the third quarter with Alana Woods replacing Simons at goal shooter.
Mannum kept up their positive game play and even the consistent efforts from Imperials centre court players Tenesha Ytsma, Monjean and Rhiannon Jones, was not enough to close the gap on the scoring with Mannum finishing the third term with a 27 goal.
Mannum started the fourth quarter strongly with Alana Woods moving well, creating space in the ring, which allowed Karissa Kendall to score well for their team.
Imperials’ defence seemed to tighten their pressure, making Mannum work hard for the ball.
Short, as in goal shooter for Imps was working tirelessly for her team, along with Monjean in at center feeding well.
Imps managed to outscore Mannum in the last quarter, but Mannum’s early lead in the game was enough to give them a comfortable win 60 to 32.

13 and under division one
In the first match when these two teams played Mannum went down by six goals.
So one round on and with a few matches under both teams belts this match was going to be tight.
Both team were not giving much away.
Nikita Hein for Imps and Kate Woollard for Mannum, both in centre, were running the court well and working hard for their teams.
Mannum goalers were a little off, shooting at only 42 per cent allowing Imps to turn the ball to their attack line and into Myra Van Wyngaard, who was shooting at 100 per cent.
At the end of the first break Imperials had the lead by one goal.
In the second quarter not too much changed.
Mannum increased their percentage in goals to 60 per cent, whilst Amy Martin in goal attack for Imps was shooting at 90 per cent.
Kathleen Westall and Jessica Hill were not giving Sophie Kroehn or Kelsey Chadwick any free shots in the goal ring.
Jasmin Story and Kaitlyn Lowe were having a great tussle on the wing, with Story holding Lowe away from the goal ring with ease.
At the half time break the scores were 17 all.
In the third quarter there was a change of plan for Mannum.
Tara Yeates came on wing attack making Story work harder to get a hold of her and creating a huge amount of drive for Mannum.
Yeates also lifted the spirits of Kroehn and Chadwick and this created a positive drive for Mannum.
The Mannum goalers were now also shooting at 100 per cent.
Mannum made changes to their defence, bringing Emily Alexander out into the wing and placing Caitlin Christiansen into goal keepers, and with Alana Schache back in goal defence, they managed to start to put it all together.
The final quarter of this match saw a new found confidence in the Mannum team. They were playing as a team, leading well and the defence was working like a dream, as was the attack.
Chadwick and Kroehn were still in fine form and the attack line was outstanding.
The defenders had now worked it out, only allowing Imps to shoot at 43 per cent, which changed the games dynamics.
In a match that was hard fought and a credit to both teams and their coaches ,Mannum ran out to win by only three goals in what was an exciting match by all accounts.

11 and under
Mannum won the centre pass and quickly scored through Rachel Gassner.
Great feeding and drive by Erika Mullins at centre for Mannum and Imperials wing attack Amekia Rigney.
Imperials centre Madeline Adler sustained an injury early into the quarter, which resulted in Rigney being moved to centre and Caitlin O’Brien coming on as wing attack.
Gassner had a great quarter, with deflections and intercepts in the goal third and combined well with Elizabeth Griggs who was shooting well.
Mannum lead by two goals at the first break.
Griggs continued to shoot well for Mannum, while Imperials goalers Jessie McDiarmid and Sarah Crane combined well, putting 10 goals on their scoreboard this quarter.
Mannum’s Eliza Male and Ayla Craig tried valiantly to limit Imperials scoring opportunities.
Imperials wing defence Savannah Story and Mannum’s Aleesha Neville were running the mid court well for their respective teams.
Scores at the long break saw Mannum seven goals trailing Imperials 13 goals.
Mannum made some changes at half time with Tegan Simons going into goal attack and Rebecca Henry back into goal defence while Imperials remained unchanged.
Mannum produced excellent passages of play this quarter with great defence work by Henry Male and Kira Durnford who was applying pressure well through the mid-court.
Mannum outscored Imperials by a goal this quarter with Simons netting six goals and Gassner two goals.
Mannum started the final quarter with great feeding into the ring by Griggs to Gassner resulting in a goal.
Mullins in centre continued with her great vision of the play, intercepting well while Griggs superbly fed to the goalers who were tightly defended by Rianna DeMichele and Sarah Austin.
All players from both teams played exceptionally well, which made it a great match for spectators to watch in an even contested game.
Imperials were able to maintain their lead and ran out winners by seven goals.

Minis
Mannum won the toss and Lara Mullins took the first centre pass.
Mannum’s defence line Chloe Yeates, Sophie Stagg and Jayme Briggs-Bishop worked hard and made many intercepts.
Imperials goalers Madison Fielke and Kate Austin scored two goals for their team in the first quarter.
Imps made many intercepts because of their height, but Mannum managed to create some great passages of play through Lara Mullins, Monique Stennett and Tess Christiansen.
Mannum goal shooter Nikayla Clark made some great leads and scored two lovely goals in the quarter. In the second quarter Abby Vivian and Lara Mullins continued to have a great tussle at centre Emily DeMichele and Georgia Sibley worked hard in defence for Imps and Mannum’s Clark and Christiansen had to work hard for any possession.
Mannum were unable to score this quarter, but Imps increased their score by one.
At half time Mannum made major changes to their team, with Jasmin Coombe coming on as centre and was evenly matched with Cara Hameister for Imps.
Lara Mullins went into goal for Mannum and had immediate impact with a long range goal.
Zara Male was providing a great target for her team mates, with some great leads and calling well, her opposition, Molly Adler, was kept on her toes.
Mannum scored two goals for the quarter and kept Imps scoreless.
In the last quarter Madison Muirhead and Katrina Kelly continued to work hard in defence for Mannum, while Georgia Neate made some excellent leads when the ball went into attack.
Coombe ran tirelessly at center for Mannum.
Lara Mullins continued her great effort with three goals for the quarter and was well backed up by Jasmin Durnford at goal shooter.
Imps improved their score by one goal in the final quarter.
Final scores were Mannum seven to Imperials four.
