TAILEM Bend A grade recorded their first win for season 2009 on Saturday, matching their record of one win in season 2008, which was against Meningie by five goals.
This time they beat Jervois by the same margin of five goals.
Well done to the team and Denise Edwards as coach for her 250th game, for their persistence and believe in themselves to put four quarters together and win a game.
While this winning feeling may be short lived, Tailem Bend will play Jervois in the final match of the season, where the memory of this week’s win will still be alive.
Mannum and Imperials’ draw of 64 goals each shows that their match was of a high standard, with 128 goals thrown during the 60-minute match, being an average of just over one goal scored every thirty seconds.
Ramblers had an expected win over Meningie to put them at ease in the fourth spot on the Meningie Fodder Premiership ladder, while the Imperials and Mannum draw just intensifies the pressure for second and third.
This week Mannum has the bye, with A and B grade playing at 3.15pm, A reserve and C grade at 2pm.
Meningie v Mypolonga
Meningie played consistent netball last week against Ramblers and if it had not been for the good Rambler defence work, which prevented more scoring opportunities, the scores may have been closer.
It appears that Meningie do play better netball against the higher standard teams, which could result in their game plan to contest every ball continuing this week against Mypolonga.
Mypolonga’s defence will have the same impact as Ramblers did on Meningie goalers Carly Vivian and Jane Swan.
Vivian is clever, moves well over her two thirds, and has matured on court with good body strength with Swan, depending more on her height and accuracy.
Mypolonga have two star players out this week on holidays, which could be relief for Meningie to stay in touch for this game.
Meningie defenders Beth Marsson and Laura Peters are working well together and if different goalers line up for Mypolonga, their game plan could be more effective.
Mypolonga have good players in reserve, so coach Pat Brown will have the options to remain competitive.
Courtney Blacker in mid court will be far more experienced than Meningie’s Haley Williams, who may not have the body strength to contain Blacker’s speed.
Rebecca Shaw, Mypolonga wing attack, who also shows great court work with good ball skills, may play against Sam Twanley for Meningie at wing defence.
Twanley gives the Meningie side physical yet good competitive challenges in the mid court, which contributes to the flow of the ball back into the goal third.
Meningie need to remain positive about this week’s game, contest every ball like last week’s match and not allow Mypolonga to take over the scoreboard.
Bottom line: Even without the usual Mypolonga line up, I would expect Mypolonga to remain focussed on having yet another win against Meningie, although not by 32 goals like the last time these two teams met.
Meningie need to continue with their good game plan of passing the ball effectively into Swan in goals, who has the confidence to always add to the score.
My tip: Mypolonga to win by 15- 20 goals
Ramblers v Jervois
Ramblers continue to show good potential on the court, nurturing young players like Sam Wehrman and Sarina Weyland.
Weyland has shown great improvement in the last few weeks reading the play well, being creative and also physically stronger.
Wehrman can never be underrated with her exceptional work rate, good intercepting and she is just a pleasure to watch.
She loves playing netball and oozes with positive attitude, which have to be an asset to the team and her club.
Ramblers have been playing with the same seven players for some weeks now and Coach Leanne Hurford has to be pleased to see each player giving their all each week for the team.
However, Jervois are not as settled and after last week’s loss to Tailem Bend, they need to refocus on the remainder of the season with a different attitude to have some more wins.
Kathy Rast will be back on court this week, but Mel Braun went down with an ankle injury last week, so Coach Joy Egmanis will be hoping it has healed quickly.
Rast and Braun have been playing well together both moving to create good opportunities in the goal circle.
Defence players Caitlin Liebich and Lorraine Haebich will be required to listen to their coaches advice on staying close to Rambler goalers, Tamara Marchetti and Tania McFee, not allowing them the space they like to move around in.
Marchetti and McFee are playing with great intensity and effective support for each other and unless their usual game plan is not disrupted, they will remain to be very confident and accurate.
Bottom line: Jervois will be challenged this week against Ramblers, who will continue with their usual successful winning game plan.
Ramblers will be impressive from the first whistle and will be coached to be dominant in all areas on the court.
Jervois have to regroup, get back the consistency we have seen, and play out the remainder of the season.
My tip: Ramblers to win by 25-plus goals.
Imperials v Tailem Bend
Tailem Bend are happy at the moment and have the potential to have more wins this season, as they now know that winning comes from combining all skills on court and playing for every opportunity to increase the score.
They appeared to have the edge throughout the whole match last week against Jervois and although Jervois were not playing with confidence to improve, Tailem Bend was the better team on the day and deserved the two premiership points.
However, Imperials will not let Tailem Bend party any longer.
Coach Jo Snell has all Imperial players committing to the game with desired results and inspiring support amongst the team.
Imperials are hungry for a premiership and all game plans seem to be falling into place for them to feel very confident for the result.
Goals come easy for Jenna Daniels and Meagan Gillespie, combined with tight defence from Dallas Huxtable, Sharon Taylor and Kylie Burns.
Tailem Bend will find it hard to match this experience and skill of the Imperials players but will play the game to the end with a focussed commitment to try their best.
Versatile players for Tailem Bend including Sarah Durdin and Athalie McArdle will give Imperials variety in the game, with their ability to change court positions with ease.
Imperials will acknowledge the Tailem Bend girls with encouragement and play the game with respect to the opposition players, who are showing good signs of improvement for the second half of the season.
Bottom line: Imperials will win this game in most positions on the court but will be challenged by Tailem Bend, who can learn so much from playing a more experienced team.
My tip: Imperials to win by 25 plus goals.
