Bill’s a legend

18 Jul, 2008 02:54 PM
LONG time Karoonda Districts Football Club member Bill Murdoch has been named the South Australian Telstra Country Footy Legend for 2008.

Mr Murdoch was granted the legendary status and a $5000 cheque for the club following the South Australian Country Football Championships in the Riverland earlier this month.

Speaking at the awards night, Mr Murdoch said he was honoured.

“Country footy is full of legends and it is an absolute honour, to not only have been nominated by the club, but to win the award,” he said.

Mr Murdoch has been involved with the Karoonda Districts Football Club for more than 60 years as a player, coach and league secretary.

His playing career spanned 16 successful years, from 1947 to 1963, and he won the Mail Medal six times.

He is currently coaching the junior colts at the football club.

KDFC secretary Caroline Phillips said the club was proud one of their life members had been recognised in such a way.

“We are also very excited to receive the $5000 prize money, which will be of great value in securing the future of our club and ensuring we can continue to provide sporting opportunities for our local community,” she said.

Telstra area representative Jo Lewis said Mr Murdoch’s contribution to the KDFC was incredible.

“I was thrilled to present Bill with the 2008 Telstra Country Footy Legend prize,” she said.

“Bill is a true inspiration to us all.”

There were eight finalists for the award in South Australia, including Mypolonga Football Club veteran Neville Martin.

Ms Lewis said all finalists made special contributions to their clubs and were valued members of the country football community.

Winners for South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia were selected from finalists by a panel comprised of SANFL, VCFL and WACFL area managers and Telstra representatives.
