Murray Bridge pair represent State in Australian Youth Cup

03 Jul, 2009 11:29 AM
MURRAY Bridge rowers Adrian Miegel and Dylan Porte have been selected to participate in the 2009 Australian Youth Cup.

The competition will be held in Penrith, New South Wales, from July 10 and will see the youths row alongside the best in the nation.

The pair have been selected to row for South Australia, with Miegel participating in the doubles, quads and eights, while Porte will row in the pairs, quads and eights.

The Youth Cup is open to rowers up to the age of 20 years old, making it remarkable that the pair, aged 16 and 17, were selected.

They will join a team made up of the South Australia's best rowers from clubs such as the University of Adelaide, Adelaide High and the Torrens Rowing Club.

Miegel, a light-weight rower, said he looked forward to competing.

"I hope to gain more experience," he said.

"I did not expect to get into it.

"Dylan and I will only row together in the eights, but I am looking forward to it."

The Unity College student said he decided to get involved in rowing following a number of his friends joining the club.

"That was four years ago," he said.

Miegel said the two were selected after completing a set of ergos with the South Australian Sports Institute.

"We then rowed with other rowers from across the State," he said.

"From there we then competed in seat racing in skulls and doubles to qualify."

Porte said he was looking forward to rowing in the eight.

"I have been rowing in a pair, which is different," he said.

"My training has changed a bit."

Porte said he decided to take up rowing after he was not playing any other sports.

"One day I would like to try and get into the Olympic team for rowing," he said. Porte said the New Zealand and Queensland teams were the biggest threat in the competition.

He said his plan for the competition was to go flat out.

"I sort of did expect to get into the State team," he said.

"The club has been a great support to me.

"They provide excellent coaching and equipment."

Porte said he had learnt a few tips from his teammates in organisation and areas where he hoped to improve.

"Rowing is a great sport to get physically fit," he said.

"You can meet great people and set yourself a personal challenge."

Porte won silver last year in the under 17 doubles at the Rowing Nationals at Lake Barrington, Tasmania.

He lost by a mere one metre.

The boys are dedicated to the sport and train 11 times a week.

Three mornings a week they begin at 3am in order to travel to Adelaide before heading to a full day of school.

Murray Bridge Rowing Club coach Ben Porte said the boys were the first group from the club to compete at such a level in a number of years.

"It is definitely a big achievement for both them and the club," he said.
