MURRAYLANDS rugby league enthusiasts may soon have a league to call their own, with a new push to develop the game in the area gaining momentum.
South Australian Rugby League (SARL) will be conducting a public meeting in Murray Bridge to gauge interest in the development of rugby league in the region.
To be held at the Murray Bridge Community Club, on February 9, the SARL is inviting anyone interested in helping to grow the game to attend.
SARL general manager Ken Kennedy said forming a league in Murray Bridge was would be on the table at the meeting.
“Basically set up a steering committee to set up a league in Murray Bridge,” he said.
“Maybe something like a four-team, seven-a-side leag-ue.”
Mr Kennedy said developing a local team to play in the competition in Adelaide was also a posibility.
He said the SARL identified Murray Bridge as an ideal area to grow the game’s profile.
“We do a good schools program in Murray Bridge, with schools from the area playing in our competitions and doing well,” he said.
“Also, there are a lot of New Zealanders in the area who understand the game well.
“And with the growing population in the area, we aim to give children and adults alike a chance to play a new sport.”
Following his South Australian State A grade rugby league selection, Murray Bridge rugby league player Sam Phillips said he would support any plan to develop the game in Murray Bridge and encouraged others to back the plans.
-Details: The meeting will be held Thursday, February 9 at the Community Club from 7pm. For more information, contact the SARL on 8340 4155 or email sarl@sarugbyleague.com.au.
