’Bridge falls short

28 Jan, 2010 07:34 AM
THE annual Tennis SA Country Carnival was held between January 11 and 15, with Murray Bridge finishing runner-up in several events.

Ten teams were entered from players of the Lower Murray Hardcourt Tennis and Murray Bridge Lawn Tennis Associations.

Two locals also entered the individual events.

Luke Wilson made the semi finals of the A mens singles and Hayley Davids was runner-up in the A womens.

It was a great effort by both players in the extreme heat experienced on the day. Teams competed in various age groups and events, with juniors playing at the Memorial Drive complex and senior teams at Reade Park Tennis Club.

Following the heat on Monday, a day of rain delays was then experienced on Tuesday, but matches eventually went ahead.

The division one men played against some strong opposition, but performed well.

They won a match against Port Pirie, took two sets from Mount Gambier, and remained competitive in other matches.

The team of Luke Wilson, Anthony Lapinskas, Steven Braun and Robbie Stefaniak enjoyed the strong competition, with all players recording wins.

The division two mens team consisted of Omar Kuchel, John Owens, Matt Perriman and Brendan Lambe.

All played well against good opposition, winning one match 5-1 and then losing four other matches.

All matches included close scores where the team lost a couple of tie-breaks which could have turned some results the other way.

The division three mens team consisted of Damien Bates, Jackson Koch, Jordan Richards, Aiden Hill and Keith Scott.

With five members in the team, each player took their turn rotating off the court.

Four members of the team were aged 17 and under and came up against some experienced veteran players.

Players enjoyed their matches and recorded some good set wins along the way, but unfortunately the team did not record any match victories.

With four teams in the event, each team played each other twice in a round robin format. The opposition commented on the improvement of the players as the week progressed.

The only womens team entered this year was Hayley Davids and Heather Richards in the division one womens event.

Six teams entered this group and following a slow start with a loss to last year’s finalists, the women picked up some good wins and finished the week off with two 3-0 wins on Friday.

With most associations struggling to get female players there were only two players in each team.

Six junior teams entered the age events played at Memorial Drive from Tuesday to Friday.

Rain caused a number od washed out games on Tuesday but the weather was kinder through the rest of the week.

Players were also able to watch some leading world mens players from the past and present hitting up at Memorial Drive for the World Tour Challenge night event.

Sophie Kroehn, Steph Hagger, Serena Lienert, Courtney Ludewigs entered their team into the under 12 girls division one after winning division two last year.

The girls went through undefeated but with the draw, another team, also undefeated, had a better percentage rate to take out the event.

Another great effort by these girls who play strong, consistent tennis, with thanks to Chelsea Hagger for being the fill-in when required.

The under 12 division two boys had four close matches in their grouping.

The team of Mitchell Lienert, Josh Binney, Isaac Smith and Slayde Moore won two of their matches and lost two more matches on a countback of games.

All boys played with great manners and enjoyed the week playing in a team together.

They also had the opportunity to play on three different surfaces clay, lawn and synthetic.

The under 14 boys division one side had actually entered into the division two but were asked to move up a division to help the draw run smoothly.

Unfortunately the other three teams were much stronger and older than the Lower Murray boys and only two singles match wins were recorded for the week.

Joel Schumacher, Ryan McKaye, Kirby Richards and Joel McFee all tried their best and showed good sportsmanship and determination against strong opposition.

The under 14 boys division two players were Shaun Farley, Mitchell Davids, Alex Cazzolato and Brodie Quarry.

From the boys’ scheduled matches they recorded one win, were competitive in the other matches and also had a washed out match.

The team recorded some good doubles and singles wins and enjoyed their week.

The under 14 girls team was made up of Mannum girls Alana Woods, Chloe Schellen, Karissa Kendall, Rachel Hartley and Ruby Adams.

The girls put in a solid team effort throughout the event coming away with some good results.

Out of five scheduled matches they narrowly lost two lots of three-all matches by a couple of games and also had one match washed out.

Overall the girls had a lot of fun and played in a great spirit.

The Under 16 girls team consisted of Lucinda Kendall, Emily Edwards, Leticia Krueger and Kirstie Gregory.

With Gregory still eligible for under 14s the girls played very well as a team and performed strongly.

With only one match loss for the week, the girls were runners-up behind an undefeated team.

A great effort, with fun had by all.

All teams looked great in their team shirts which have been sponsored by the Murray Valley Standard, and thanks to the Lawn Tennis Club and Bob Hancock for enabling the kids to have a hit on lawn to prepare for the surface at the event.

Players are reminded to have paid their fees to team managers and return shirts to the drop off points as soon as possible.

The two local associations look forward to continued interest by players and families from all clubs in the Country Carnival again next year.
