Schools set early pace

SCHOOLS shot to the top of the ladder with an emphatic eight set victory over Postel after Saturday’s second round of lawn tennis.

In sultry conditions Schools snuck away to a two set lead after the early doubles before their gents took control claiming five of the seven men’s singles sets against their undermanned opponents.

Jason ‘Stiffy’ Bormann, Kym McFee and the steady Rob Butcher all remained unbeaten while Martin ‘Doc’ Altmann and ‘Bustling’ Ben Gregory chipped in with good singles wins with Altmann clinical in his victory over Alex Saint.

For Postel, old war horse Jack Reddin was too cunning for young Tom Austin while top gent Anthony Lapinskas survived a spirited challenge from Ashley ‘Chesty’ Temby before winning 9-6.

In the ladies section Schools dynamic duo Tania McFee and Kylie Bormann remained unbeaten with McFee having a good tussle with Helen Daish before claiming a 6-4 victory.

For Postel, Leanne Maxwell continued her good form, remaining unbeaten, while youngsters Nat Daish and Jessica Hein captured good singles wins against their more experienced opponents before Schools claimed five of the last six doubles sets to cruise to victory.

Murraylands v Sportsmen

Murraylands also remained unbeaten after accounting for a stubborn Sportsmen side by four sets.

It was all tied up at nine sets apiece coming into the final doubles rotation but Murraylands won five of the last six sets on offer including two vital tie-break wins to snatch the points.

Newcomer Geoff Mills made an impact with another big win en route to an unbeaten day, while burly veteran Roger Andriske made a welcome return to the grass and was equally as impressive with an undefeated effort.

Captain Luke Wilson, despite a late set concentration loss, claimed a 9-6 victory against wily campaigner David Schulz to also remain unbeaten while Phil Marks had a tough 7-5 victory over Greg Lannan.

For Sportsmen, Paul Hein had a good win over the unpredictable Darryl Frahn while tail-enders Kelvin ‘Froggy’ Farnham and Steve Law both captured good singles wins with Law surviving in a tiebreak against improving junior Lachlan Carter.

In the ladies section former club champion Yvonne Smith made a guest appearance for Murraylands and showed she still has the goods with an unbeaten effort while junior Amekia Rigney scored a confidence building singles win over Nat Pearson.

For Sportsmen, Sherryn Crane returned to the winners list with a big win over Caitlin Waechter, while Sharon Farnham and Rachael Andrews both captured comfortable singles wins.

Swanport v Brinkley

Swanport opened their account with a percentage boosting win at the expense of Brinkley.

The Swannies got off to a flyer capturing all but one of the opening doubles.

They then went on to claim eight of the twelve singles sets to put the victory out of reach of the “Beige Brigade” by the time the final doubles had started.

Dave Altmann led the charge, remaining unbeaten along with rising star Alex Cazzolato and Leigh ‘Rooster’ Ryswk with Cazzolato finally getting the better of Jordan Richards 7-5 in an entertaining single, while the”Spray-Tan Kid” Ben Quast chipped in with a singles win on his return to the Swannies line-up after escaping with a 9-7 win over youngster Joel McFee.

For Brinkley, Joel Schumacher scored a great tiebreak win over Albert ‘The Grinch’ Goodridge and Jack Woods overpowered a determined young William Crane, however Josh Maczkowiack was a standout remaining unbeaten after a tough tiebreak win over Keith Scott.

In the women’s section, for the victors, Katherine Murdoch continued her sparkling early season form remaining unbeaten as did Val Scott.

New recruit Bianca Gazzola chipped in with a good singles win against Donna Altamura while top lady Leanne “Grimace” Riches left the purple shorts in the wardrobe and with a more conventional outfit finally got the better of Brinkley stalwart Heather Richards 6-4 to also remain unbeaten for the Swannies.

For Brinkley, Paula Reid stopped a clean sweep as she made it two singles in a row after accounting for youngster Steph Hagger 6-2.
