Broncos bolt from climate controversy

30 Jun, 2011 11:32 PM

THE Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club has withdrawn its venue from the Lord Christopher Monckton speaking tour of Australia after complaints from its members.

The club's general manager, Geoff Kuehner, confirmed the withdrawal last night.

Tour organiser Andy Semple said Mr Kuehner had told him the decision was because of member complaints and a discussion with the club board.

''He said in 15 years he had never received so many complaints from members about a speaker,'' Mr Semple said.

Mr Semple said the event had been moved to the nearby Gambaro's restaurant, owned by the family of the Liberal MP Teresa Gambaro.

He said ''the real victim in all of this has been freedom of speech''.

Lord Monckton spoke at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle last night despite a call by 50 academics for the university to cancel the lecture because of Monckton's ''discredited'' views about climate change.

Lord Monckton created a stir before he even arrived in Australia by alleging official climate advisor Professor Ross Garnaut had a ''fascist point of view'' during a lecture.

He later apologised.
