Man dies in Murray Bridge crash between car and truck closes South Eastern Freeway's Swanport Bridge

A 21-year-old man from Seaton has tragically died following a serious crash at Murray Bridge just before 2pm today, Wednesday, July 12.

The man was the driver and sole occupant of a Holden Commodore sedan that crashed head-on with a semi-trailer.

Emergency services were called to the bridge after a collision occurred between the car and the semi-trailer carrying agricultural machinery across the Swanport Bridge.

The truck driver, a 48-year-old man from Cowirra, was taken to the Murray Bridge Hospital with minor injuries.

Major Crash Investigators have attended the scene.

The Swanport Bridge will remain closed for most of the evening and traffic heading towards the bridge from both directions is being diverted through Murray Bridge.

The speed limit on the bridge, on the South Eastern Freeway, was reduced to 80 kilometres per hour after another head-on-crash between a car and a truck in June 2015.

The 2015 crash caused the death of a 61-year-old Mount Gambier woman, led truck driver Kenneth Laurence Pillar to be jailed for five years, and sparked debate about whether the bridge should be duplicated.
