Insight: A small amount of time and energy can make a difference this Christmas

The silly season is fast approaching and with it comes parties, celebrations and a whole lot of socialising.

The weather is warm, the days are long and we’re out and about enjoying life.

But unfortunately for many Australians, this time of year can be full of sadness.

Whether it’s missing lost loved ones or a reminder that they’ll be spending Christmas Day alone, the summer holidays aren’t always the most wonderful time of the year for everybody.

So what can you do?

Luckily, there’s more to do than you think, and it takes only a small amount of time and energy.

Take the time to reach out to friends and family to check on how they’re doing.

All it might take is a phone call, a simple text or a short walk.

If you have elderly neighbours that live by themselves, why not pop on over and see if there’s anything they need a hand with?

Perhaps it’s the right time to simply introduce yourself and say, “hi”, and let them know that you are there for them if they need a little assistance or support.

Remember, what will take only 10 minutes of your time could make someone’s day or even week.

If you have trouble putting yourself out there face-to-face, which many of us do, jump on Nabo.com.au and introduce yourself to your neighbours.

For the elderly or less mobile, this could be the social interaction that they would otherwise not have had for the day and who knows, you could also make a new friend.

It’s easy to forget about those who are less fortunate, but now is the time to reach out and let them know that they’re not alone.

I can’t think of an easier or more heart-warming gift to give this year.

Be an active part of your community and connect this Christmas.
