Like mum, like daughters.

A Tailem Bend mum and her twin girls are now working side by side after becoming SA Ambulance Service volunteers.

Tailem Bend ambulance volunteer Gayle Davis was inspired to join the SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) volunteering ranks in Coonalpyn 21 years ago after she discovered her twin baby girls both had medical issues.

Now her “baby girls”, Rhiannon and Brittany, have joined her as fully qualified SAAS volunteers at Roxby Downs and Tailem Bend.

Amazingly, they all managed to work the same shift recently for the Tailem regional response team.

Gayle, whose day job is in rostering at SA Ambulance Service headquarters in Adelaide, explained why she was inspired to train as an ambulance volunteer years ago.

“Rhiannon was born with a congenital heart defect and I later found out that Brittany had a severe allergy to bees as well as other medical issues,” she said.

“Living rurally and quite far from a hospital, I thought it would be a good idea to join my local volunteer ambulance team to be trained enough to look after my family but to also give back to the community around me.”

It wasn’t standard practice to keep adrenaline on country ambulances back then, but after discovering Brittany’s allergy, the family GP pushed for it to be made available on board all ambulances.

“One of the reasons this change came into place was because of Brittany, so we are very grateful for that,” she said.

Regional team leader Paula Parker said the Tailem team was lucky to have such a great family on board supporting her volunteer teams in the Coorong and further afield.

“We are very privileged to have the three Davis girls working with us in this region and also the team at Roxby Downs really value what Rhiannon brings to them,” she said.
