Murray Bridge Police are investigating a deliberately lit fire at a church overnight.

An officer came across several small fires in garden beds near the intersection of West Terrace and Second Street while on patrol about 2.40am on Saturday November 11.

The patrol then noticed a fire coming from the nearby church.

MFS crews attended and extinguished the blaze.

It appears the fire had been lit in a wheelie bin placed against a church wall and the fire spread up the external wall into the roof, causing around $50,000 damage.

Crime scene and fire cause investigators will be attending the scene this morning.

Anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in the area overnight is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
