Record numbers at Murraylands APEX Mannum Fun Run and Walk

Record numbers of people have turned out for this year’s Murraylands APEX Mannum Fun Run and Walk, enjoying a fun and active Sunday on the banks of the Murray River.

Nearly 250 entrants jogged, walked, rode gophers and pushed prams to the finish line as family and friends cheered them on at Mannum’s Mary Ann Reserve.

Event ambassadors, Para‐athletics World Championship athlete Daniel Kirk and SANFL Sturt Premiership player Josh Dodd, gave the crowd some insight into the life of a professional sporting person.

Mid Murray Council OPAL Program Manager, Amy Loechel said: “Currently in training for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, Daniel delivered some fitting pre‐event inspiration.”

“Daniel opened with a great quote from US basketball legend Michael Jordan ‐ ‘I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying’,” she said.

Both ambassadors showed the community how it was done, with Daniel taking on the 3km gopher run and Josh striding out in the 5km walk event.

“Daniel and Josh were perfect ambassadors and embodied the spirit of inclusion and achievement,” Ms Loechel said.

“They showed everyone that fitness can be adapted to suit both your age and abilities.”

Showing the men of the Murraylands how it’s done, the newly introduced 3km run event was won by Ben Quinn, pushing daughter Indi in the pram.

To reward hundreds of hot and sweaty entrants, the Murraylands APEX team served up a breakfast of bacon and eggs, muesli cups, fresh fruit and coffee after the event.
