School’s out for summer! School’s out forever!
So sang Alice Cooper.
Well, it is for year 12s.
If your son or daughter has just completed year 12 you will be familiar with the excitement, the pressure, the stress, the deadlines, the exams and the emotional roller coaster which it creates.
Exhausting, isn’t it?
But now it’s over and the final exams are done.
It’s a keen wait for the results while fingers are crossed and prayers are made.
But what happens once the results are in?
Hopefully the experience will be a positive one and young people will get the results they hope for: a pathway to university, an apprenticeship or a job to go to.
But what about all those young people who don’t find a job straight away or get the results they need?
We are frequently told that the unemployment rate in South Australia is the highest in the country and youth unemployment even higher.
The end of school means the start of a whole new life phase and a new set of challenges to negotiate.
Some young people have spent the last 12 or 13 years seeing their friends on an almost daily basis while their week has been carefully timetabled down to the last minute.
Going to work means setting foot in a new world of uncertainties and challenges.
No teachers or homework but plenty of work to do.
What about finding a job, making a resume, getting an interview?
What if you didn’t get the results you hoped for?
All this takes time and can be anxiety provoking.
It’s okay to take the time to work out what your options are and what work or career path is the right one for you.
Not many people know what they want to do for a living when they leave school.
If you do, great; but if you don’t and it’s bothering you, you can seek help.
It’s not the end of the world – it’s the beginning of a whole new life phase for you.
