Members of the Tintinara Community Men’s Shed are looking forward to extending their services and opening hours after receiving $4000 of funding to outfit the new kitchen.
The funding, which will go towards purchasing cooking equipment, was awarded through the State Government’s Grants for Seniors program.
Since opening in 2014, the shed has become a popular hub for men and women of the Tintinara community to connect, learn new skills and enjoy social activities.
With a fully equipped kitchen, the shed will be able to extend its opening hours, introduce new activities and also be able to increase regular events such as barbecues and community open days.
Coorong Mayor Neville Jaensch said the funding was good news for such a valuable community resource for the Coorong district.
“Council has been hugely supportive of the men’s shed and the important facilities they provide,” he said.
“The men’s shed movement is a phenomenon that has been incredibly successful in isolated and regional towns, and Tintinara in no exception.
“The shed provides a key role in the wellbeing and health of elderly and disabled residents within the Tintinara community and provides a safe and secure outlet for both men and women to interact, learn and exchange new skills.”
“Funding was good news for such a valuable resource”
The men’s shed has been successful in winning grants totalling tens of thousands of dollars during the last two years, which Mr Jaensch said was reflective of the positivity and connectedness the shed created.
“It’s important that council support initiatives that provide opportunities for the community to access and participate in a wide range of projects and events, and the men’s shed is a fantastic resource for the whole Coorong district,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the new facilities and sampling some on-site cooking at the shed very soon.”
