That time of the year has once again rolled around for pumpkin growing enthusiasts to get into their gardens and prepare for the Murray River Giant Pumpkin Competition at Cadell.

In preparation for next year’s event, which takes place on Easter Saturday, organisers have released free seeds at selected locations in the Riverland and Murray regions and at outlets in the Adelaide Hills.

Chairman of the Cadell Community and Tourism Association Jason Lukacs said many past entrants have been backyard grows who get the whole family involved.

“Each Easter, our harvest festival comes alive with everything pumpkin and we hope to have record entrants in 2018.” He said.

Mid Murray Council Mayor Dave Burgess said organisers hope to see someone come close to beating the event’s record next year.

“We have seen pumpkins of all shapes and sizes and no-one has beaten the event record of 390 kilograms as yet,” he said.

“People love coming to the festival to see the pumpkins and the stories the growers have behind them.”

The first prize for the competition is donated by MGA Insurance and will see the grower of the heaviest pumpkin over 300 kilograms - if achieved - fly to the United States for the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival.
