A little-known Nationals MP has taken over responsibility for the Murray-Darling Basin and Australia's agricultural sector.

Forty-one-year-old David Littleproud has been in federal Parliament barely 18 months since being elected as the Member for Maranoa, the outback expanse of southwestern Queensland.

The former banker has an acute understanding of the important role small business and agriculture play in creating jobs and economic growth, according to his website.

Mr Littleproud replaced Barnaby Joyce, the Nationals leader who combined agriculture and water into one portfolio before his citizenship status forced him into a by-election.
