The twenty-sixth annual Meningie Progress Association Australia Day celebrations and fun run will be held on Friday, 26 January at the Meningie Museum on Fiebig Road, Meningie.

The fun run has been held every year since 1993 and now attracts up to 250 participants from as far away as Victoria and Adelaide with many more participating in the breakfast and award presentations after.

Organizer of the event, Marianne Cunneen said that the fun run is over five or ten kilometers and can be taken at a leisurely stroll or a serious run. Participants can also ride or scooter the distance or even gopher it if they wish.

“One year we had a participant do the whole five kilometers on stilts”.

The course takes participants along the shores of Lake Albert giving them a great view along the way.

The fun run starts at 7.30am with registrations from 6.30am.

The event is held in front of the Meningie Cheese Factory Restaurant so good coffee will be available from 6.30 and breakfast ably cooked by the Meningie Lions Club is available from 8am.

Marianne added that the official proceedings will begin at 9.15 with the Ngarrindjeri ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony followed by the Rritjarukar (Willy Wagtails) Performance.  Marianne said this will be a “highlight” of the morning.

The Meningie Progress Association Recognition of Community Service Award for 2018 will then be presented followed by the Coorong District Council Meningie Citizen of the Year Award to Mr Andrew Dawes and the Event of the Year Award presented to the Meningie Food, Fun and Family Fair.

The celebrations will conclude with the presentations to the fun run winners as well as winners of the best Australia Day theme dress and photo opportunities. Lunch is available at the Meningie Cheese Factory Restaurant. Bookings can be made by calling 8575 1914.

As the event is being held on the Friday of a long weekend, Marianne said the Meningie Progress Association are expecting a record crowd provided the weather is kind.
