Hard waste collection service to grow with help of improvements

Since the hard waste collection program introduced by the Rural City of Murray Bridge in partnership with Orana in November last year the service has been going from strength to strength.

With the introduction of the orange stickers and Orana’s push to take on more daily pick ups, residents in the Murray Bridge area can expect “improvements” in the service.

Council’s chief executive Michael Sedgman said the program had been well received by the community after some initial teething issues.

“One change we will make shortly is issuing residents who have a scheduled kerbside collection with an orange sticker to place on the collection,” he said.

“This will ensure other residents know the hard waste is an authorised collection and will be removed that day.

“A letter is also to be included with the sticker to remind residents of approved items that can be left out for collection.”

Hard  waste that is collected through the service is brought but to Murray Bridge Orana site where they are sorted where it is processed either for landfill or recycling.

Orana’s Sheree Smith said that through the service around 150 pickups a month are averaged.

Business Manager Brian Bartel said that they were hoping to increase the number of pickups currently being completed.

“At the moment we are managing about 10 a day but we aim to be managing about 20 a day,” he said.

“We have around six to eight employees working on the hard waste collection and there about 20 to 25 employees who rotate on that for the five day period.”

Mr Bartel also mentioned the benefits that the workers and wider community experience through the service have been very positive.

“It gives our employees a new opportunity to connect with people in the community. They feel valued and worthwhile because of what they can contribute,” he said.

“We’ve had lots of positive comments from the wider community mentioning how glad they are the service is being provided. 

“It’s great for the employees doing the work to hear those comments and get that feedback and be part of providing this service to the community.’

Residents who currently receive a three bin collection service (blue general, yellow recycling and green organics) are entitled to one free hard waste collection every 12 months, or a free pass to take one 6x4 trailer load of hard waste to the Brinkley Transfer Station.
