Volunteering with headspace

Volunteering experiences offer a sense of purpose and achievement, and provides opportunities for personal growth. At headspace we have enthusiastic volunteers aged 16-25 who are passionate about youth mental health and wellbeing. These young people form our Youth Reference Group.

I began my experience at headspace in 2016 as a Youth Reference Group member. During that time, I developed friendships, gained confidence, developed skills, and felt a sense of belonging. We held successful events including the screening of EMBRACE, the Health and Wellbeing Festival, and created a video raising awareness for young men and mental health. Through these events and through the video, we were able to reach the community and start conversations around youth health.

We spent a lot of time as a group hanging out and chatting while eating plenty of food! headspace provided opportunities for development through attending seminars on mental health and wellbeing, as well as being on an interview panel as a young person. Our young people play an important role in helping us create a centre that is youth friendly and engaging.

After volunteering for just under two years, and completing a bachelor degree in psychology, I was offered a job as the Community Connections Officer at headspace Murray Bridge Complex Care Mount Barker Outreach. With our growing Youth Reference Group, we aim to further raise awareness and reduce stigma in the community through being involved in similar events, working with schools, and creating resources for young people.

My life and the perspectives I have today would be tremendously different without this volunteering experience. I recommend joining the Youth Reference Group if you are a young person who is passionate about mental health and well-being, and would like to make a difference in your community.
