New laws predicted for motorbike riders

Feedback is being sought on recommendations to the motorcycle licensing system the state government is looking to implement because of the large number of motorbike fatalities last year.

Road Safety Minister Chris Picton said the report was out for public consultation.

There are quite a number of recommendations which included items such as:

raising the minimum age for a learner permit from 16 to 18;

a minimum tenure of six months for a learner permit;

prohibiting riders on learners or R-Date licences from carrying passengers, riding between midnight and 5am, riding with no concentration of alcohol or drugs, towing a trailer;

minimum tenure of three years for R-Date riders.
