Tailem Bend Railway Station celebrates centenary

THE town the railways built has celebrated 100 years of the grand old building at its heart.

About 150 people gathered at Tailem Bend Railway Station to enjoy a day of family fun on Saturday, which begun with an address and the unveiling of a plaque by Governor Kevin Scarce.

More flocked to a cabaret that night and a reunion of former residents and school train passengers at the football clubrooms on Sunday.

Rear Admiral Scarce addressed the crowd almost 100 years to the day since his predecessor, then-Governor Sir Day Hort Bosanquet, first inspected the station, and its historical significance was not lost on him.

"The great railway station situated behind us still stands today as a striking feature of our heritage," he said.

"Our State of South Australia can be thankful for this hidden gem, particularly as we look to the next 100 years."

Coorong Mayor Roger Strother commended Tailem Rail's volunteers, including Vanessa and Russell Hunt, and the community for supporting its transformation into a museum and tourist information outlet.

The Governor's wife, Liz Scarce, then presented prizes to the winners of a Tailem Bend Primary School colouring competition before the crowd dispersed to enjoy morning tea, a photographic exhibition and a range of stalls at the Willow Street precinct.

The current Tailem Bend Railway Station building opened on October 7, 1913 and served as a key transit point for school students, grain, freight and commuters for 86 years.

It was decommissioned in 1996 and re-opened as a museum on May 22, 2005.
