Soroptimist International of Murray Bridge welcomed Athalie McArdle, creater of the A Gift from MA Foundation, to their meeting on Thursday, June 2.
In response to a donation to the charity ‘A gift from MA’, Athalie explained how the foundation was set up in 2012 after the death of her mother, Mary Ann Slape who lost her battle with cancer.
She said that Mary Ann’s family were aware of the expense incurred with frequent journeys to Adelaide hospitals for regular cancer treatment.
While they knew they couldn’t cure the cancer, Athalie said the foundation was established to help alleviate some of the worry about petty expenses like fuel for cancer patients living in regional towns.
Recipients of donations are presented with a fuel voucher of $50 along with a chocolate Freddo Frog, marking Mary Ann’s signature gift.
Mary Ann worked as a Nurse at the Bridge Clinic and earned the love and respect of those around her.
The Murray Bridge Soroptimist Club was thrilled to be able to support such a worthwhile and helpful organisation in memory of such a special woman.
The foundation has raised money throughout the community through various means.
Donations came from a fun run, $2 entry levies at local football matches, the sale of personalised christmas cards, and gifts received ‘out of the blue’ from word of mouth promotion.
Athalie also outlined her upcoming fundraiser as an entertaining evening featuring stage hypnotist, Isaac Lomman.
The fundraiser will be held at the Tailem Bend town Hall on Friday, July 1.
The event will begin at 8pm until 9.30pm.
All money raised will go towards providing funds for travel for cancer patients in the regions.
