Members of Soroptimist International of Murray Bridge recently listened with disbelief, to hear the plight of girls whose education is disrupted because of lack of sanitary items.
Guest speakers Sally Charlton and Katherine Steinert represent “Days for Girls”.
This program addresses feminine hygiene issues in developing countries.
Girls are banished from all forms of social activity, including attending school, during their monthly period, because of lack of sanitary protection.
This enforced “time out” from society ensures days of isolation, days of missing school, days without income, days of shame.
Days for Girls is a grassroots, not for profit, organisation creating a better future for girls by providing advocacy, reproductive health education and sustainable feminine hygiene products.
This allows young women to discover their potential and self-value, and become equal participants and agents in social change.
It gives them more opportunities to grow, thrive, and contribute to their community.
Each girl supported receives a kit of materials that will help her cope with this special time of the month. Items are renewed as required to cover a three year period.
A sample kit was inspected.
It includes cloth sanitary pads, underwear, flannel, soap, all presented in a draw string bag.
The separate products are hand made with donated material by volunteers from around the world.
At the meeting, Soroptimist members were also pleased to know the long awaited Domestic Violence booklet of the Murray Bridge Regional Collaboration on Violence against Women and Children has been printed and will be launched on Friday, August 26.
The group will be holding a fundraiser at Sue’s Spectacular English Garden in Aldgate.
People will be able to explore the beautiful garden for a fee of $10.
They will have the chance to purchase their own pot plants from the garden and enjoy complimentary tea, coffee and treats.
The fundraiser will be held on Sunday, September 10 from 11am to 4pm.
No RSVP is required from those attending the event.
